The blood is considered as one of the most important fluid flowing inside the human body. The blood is responsible for the circulation of vital nutrients and also aids in the removal of body waste. There are three formed elements of the blood namely the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells or erythrocytes are considered the most predominant cell in the human body. They contain hemoglobin which is a protein that carries essential iron that is responsible for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide that is eventually dissolved extracellularly in the form of bicarbonate iron found in the plasma. The element that is responsible for the protection and defense of the body are the white blood cells. White blood cells are also known as leucocytes are vital in combatting against bacteria, viruses and parasites in order to defend the human body. Their role in defending the body can be done through either introducing antibodies that overpower the germs or surround and eventually devour the foreign bacterial presence. Vaccines, for instance, are used in order to familiarize the white blood cells to different illnesses. The third element, the platelets, is irregularly shaped and colorless. They are the blood clotting due to their sticky nature. As part of the body’s natural control for blood loss, the body sends platelets to clot blood and prevent greater damage such as hemorrhage. With the help of Vitamin K, calcium and fibrogen, platelets surround the wound. The significance of platelets is that it saves people from bleeding to death (Franklin Institute, 2009).
