Millenials is a term used to describe a section of the population born between the years 1981 and 2000. Currently, these group of individuals is aged between 16 and 36. Other terms used to describe this generation are Generation Y, The Peter Pang Generation, Generation WE, and The Boomerang Generation. Some of the distinct characteristics that define individuals in this generation are social media connection, collaboration, and achievement.
Generation Y is well-defined by their social media connection. Having been born in the social media age, they use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites to get and share information. They view companies that do not employ social media effectively as irrelevant.
Another characteristic of this populace is collaboration. They are exceptionally team-oriented rather than being individualists, and like collaborating and making friends with colleagues. Individuals in this group do not want to appear better than other members of the same group but want to be seen as part of a group. They abhor selfishness and are focussed on volunteerism. When it comes to leadership styles in an organization, millennials prefer egalitarian leadership.
The millennials are also characterized by high achievement. Their grade points are rising, and crime rates are falling. Their major focus is hard work, getting high grades, and extracurricular activities which result in higher academic achievement levels. To them, college is key to high-paying career and success, and thus may miss other aspects of college education. They focus more on achievement than on personal growth and development. Regarding careers, they prefer mathematics and science-oriented fields as contrasted with the Boomer generation who were majorly humanities and arts-oriented. In organizations they are employed in, they value the opportunity to advance and develop their careers.
