Individual Case Analysis: A summary of leadership challenges faced by the leader in assuring system changes prepared for the next pandemic
While working in a pandemic influenza outbreak in the United States, the leader faces many different challenges. Working as a responsive leader of the American Red Cross, I have the responsibility to summarize these challenges. The influenza is a virus that is transforming from one to another rapidly with the passage of time mainly Vietnam and Thailand. Similarly, when the influenza was increasing than spread towards more and pandemic outbreak also occur. However, the leader faced decision making as well as coordination problems at each level. In the public health, the leader is unable to do proper planning (Lindebaum, 2010). As the time move and the disease became increasing day by day, they need vaccines for curing of it. Hence, the demand of vaccines also increases. The challenge that faced by the leader is to distribute these vaccines effectively in the desirable areas for the betterment of individuals (Danforth, 2012). The other challenge is to give a description of the potential drug that is antiviral and supply them in proper time limit for the betterment of individuals. Then the development process takes place where the leader made efforts to fulfill the requirement and supply them on time. The production takes time to do so that it required time to supply the products. The leader needs to take effective decisions to start the production on time and supply them on the desirable area to fulfill the needs and wants of the public. After this, it is also the responsibility of the leader to tell the advantage of the vaccination to public on time. The leader also faces the near term strategies to tell the public about the pandemic threats. In this way, public gain awareness and take the vaccination on time to cure oneself.
The explanation of the challenges identified in collectively affects the crisis response by the system and the individuals within it.
When the time of crisis occurs, the leader should take steps to deal with this worse time. For this purpose, the leader accepts the challenge and follows certain steps of the leader’s decision-making process so that he will take effective steps and fulfill the responsibility (Nahavandi, 2014). The decision making process includes:
Informed and participatory: The leader gets awareness that the disease of pandemic is spreading rapidly in humans of Vietnam and Thailand. He gathers the information about why the disease is causing and understand the effects of the disease carefully. He then takes decisions to bring the vaccines for saving the life of the public.
Value-based: The leader will give value to the nation so that he will make the mission and fulfill his responsibility effectively.
Beneficial: Similarly, the leader than communicate with followers and tell the consequences about their advantage for taking these vaccines and secure themselves from the disease.
System focus: the leader then gives focus towards the issues that are ethical concerns and contribute within it.
Reasonable: These decisions taken by the leader sound reasonable to gain attraction of followers and deal with the pandemic disease easily.
Transparent: Finally, the leader decides how to move further and deal with future if the disease come.
Transformational and transactional leaders might influence outcomes within the case
Transformational leadership is the active one in which the leaders enhance the motivation level of the followers. Hence, the quality of identifying the best and worst is developed so that followers move according to its (Lindebaum & Cartwright, 2010). The leaders use to behave in such a way that attracts the followers towards him. These types of leader play a significant role in the above case to motivate the followers to take the vaccine as soon as they can to save their lives and deal with the disease effectively.
The other is transactional leadership in which the leader gives rewards to the followers for their efforts (Baltimore, 2012). However, this leadership focuses towards supervisory role and performance of a group of individuals and then give rewards or punishment on their doing efforts. This condition is not suitable for the case because in this way followers may not retain for long periods.
Poor leadership might affect the outcome of the case
In the case, if the condition is not suitable at the time then can loss the concentration of followers and it will be the poor leadership. If the finance is not present than leadership prove as a poor one that affect the outcomes and the decisions can be worse as well. Similarly, if the morale is low, then it causes leadership poor. The followers if misdirect then they will lose their motivation level. However, the poor communication between leader and follower cause poor leadership as well, in which misunderstanding occurs and not gain concentration of them again. While inspiring the followers, it is not easy for the leaders to gain attraction if things are not clear. If the leadership is poor, nation cannot survive for longer periods.
