Art exists in different forms that depict and display different themes and messages to its audience. Irrespective of the form that the piece of art is used, such as drawings, paintings, sculptures and films among others, it is intended to display the intellectual and social aspects that carry specific and particular information to its audience. Art, therefore, has contributed greatly to the interpretation that society has in regard to many issues that have happened not only in the future but also the modern times. This paper presents the discussion regarding art noted through the “cornett art tour” and presenting an item that captured my attention as well as opinion regarding linking are and the social sciences.
Cornett building is one among many that has been uniquely designed by renowned architecture that has stood the taste of time to the modern days. The building itself has a lot of artistic features both within and without the structure that has contributed greatly to display its beauty. Ancient buildings across many parts were designed in consideration of social features, and; therefore, such structures besides performing their intended purposes f offering shelter among other businesses have displayed social features and elements about a society that convey certain messages. Within the building that has different departments within the university with many floors, artistic features both of ancient and modern times are displayed within the building and different departments. The items are of high quality and standards that have added beauty besides conveying and communicating meaning to the public (Cornett & Smithrim, 2009). Art is intended to communicate with its audience and, therefore, art items have to be placed and displayed strategically at important location. This enables it reach its full potential by reaching out to many people and public as possible and communicate the different messages that the pieces of art has display.
Art in the stated building is strategically placed in doors and windows. This is because at the site placed the path that intended audience of the different art pieces uses and, therefore, it realizes its potential and intention of entertaining, educating, and informing various features. Placing of such artistic pieces at wrong locations might limit the chances of them reaching their full potential. On the same note, the entrance and exit doors of the building and rooms within it are designed with artistic features such as paintings and drawings that have added value and display different messages and themes. The doors, therefore, perform more than one function, and this feature was common in many ancient buildings that made them unique. Many buildings of the ancient times had such features in many parts of the structures that conveyed different cultural messages and features. It is imperative to note that the marketing as a strategy ensures the success of any business and, therefore, art has to borrow this concept and idea to ensure that artistic pieces realize the intended goals and potential. This entails strategically placing them at the correct place and places that facilitate success.
Choosing a particular art piece at the building was challenging because of the high quality and standards that both pieces displayed. However, Susan Point (2006) piece of “Symphony of Butterflies” turned out to be the most exciting piece that I saw. This is because the piece uses watery colors that are well balance bringing out the beauty that butterflies create in the natural world. A mixture of color is well placed balancing bright and dark colors that bring out the image in a good manner. The background color used for the piece is also good displaying the sky and, therefore, reinforcing meaning of the drawing, making it easier for the public to make and interpret meaning from the piece.
Linking of First Nations art to social sciences is a good idea because art and social sciences are related in many aspects.
Art depicts and tells of the developments in social sciences and, therefore, incorporating the two helps its audiences better understand the message and concept being displayed. Like the saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words, this applies also to artistic features and products. Art summarizes many features discussed and presented in the social life making students, and audiences among other people examine and comprehend issues better than they would have done without those artistic items. This fact has been scientifically proved in relation to methods of teaching and curriculum developments across many places in the world.
Having art around UVic is a great idea that has to be encouraged not only across few departments, but also be spread across all institutions and campuses of the university. Art besides adding beauty to the environment, it entertains as well as relevant messages and themes communicate. Being able to analyze, and artistic piece develops and encourages students and all people to improve their critical and analytical thinking and reasoning (Congdon & Hallmark, 2011). This is because art display information beyond what can be seen in the normal context. It has made students and staffs of the university notice other artistic pieces and appreciate them, as well.
