I hate Starbucks
The article is about the hatred the author has for Starbucks and the reasons behind it. The author mainly refers to the attitude of the top management of the company towards the working conditions and how the regular employees are treated by their managers.
First of all, I would like to point out the bright sides of the reading. The author managed to explain the key points of his article in a really concise and witty manner. He explains the key conflicts briefly and in the same time his main ideas are easily understood by the readers and make them realize the problem right away.
Secondly, he still manages to keep his attitude positive when it comes to the employees of the chain. He agrees that the atmosphere of the coffee shop is very warm and pleasant, and it is always a pleasure to come back. Basically, he distinguishes the employees’ and employer’s side of the problem really well. He manages to point out the disadvantages of the strategy of the top management contains and in the same time admits that the teams which most coffee shops hire are really capable and always eager to deliver the best quality product to the customer.
In my opinion, it was a bad idea to start an article with “I hate Starbucks”. The main goal of the article is to draw reader’s attention to the problem and may him rethink the main aspects of working environment at the big company which can be addressed and improved. The problem is not Starbucks as brand but Starbucks as a corporation and its responsibilities. Those readers who are fans of Starbucks and visit their coffeehouses on regular basis will close the page right away – no one wants to hear one more story about expensive coffee which only certain strata of society can afford. If the author’s goal was to influence the reader’s opinion how a company must operate and treat its employees, then choosing such a negative phrase as an opening was not the best idea.
Also, the author criticizes the aggressive strategy of the company aimed at winning the bigger percent of the market and winning it over from other small enterprises leaving no chance of existence for them. I strongly disagree with this statement. All the companies in the United States are functioning on the competitory basis and are monitored by the state’s competition law. All the companies are given equal opportunities to operate successfully on the market.
In conclusion I would like to mention that the overall impression of the article is quite decent. It is concise, informative and well-structured. However, it does not give the readers the whole picture of the problem and is focused on criticizing Starbucks and presenting a one-sided opinion of the company. Also, as I have already mentioned before, starting the article with a negative statement is a bad idea since it pushes away the other readers. If I were in his shoes, I would definitely add more information about the other aspects of this issue.
