Employee orientation is the method of familiarizing the employee to the organization, company or the intended job. The purpose of the orientation is to help the employee to gain better understanding of the processes involved at the workplace and start the journey of integration. It is a good exercise since it helps the new employee to understand his or her position at the organization, obligations bestowed to him or her and how they are supposed to tackle them.
There is the need for a new system administrator to be acquainted with the job and its environment. It means that the system administrator must be shown the direction in which to focus so as to ensure that he or she does his job to its best. The work of a system administrator is to take care of system administration, to maintain the system, verify that the system is working, supervision of the performance of the system, ensure there is a backup and recovery plan as well as policy, and even set up passwords and other system authentication requirements.
The orientation process starts early by preparation of the workplace and welcoming. The system administrator should be shown the place of work. Here the administrator will be directed on the tools to use for work which include.
The computer systems
The network system
The cloud passwords and list of supporting services
The number of computers on the network
The expected colleagues
There is need to ensure that the employee gets acquainted with the mode of operation in the workplace. This should be handled systematically so as to help him or her absorb the information slowly. This is to ensure that the employee does not get conflicting information or rather too much information than he or she can handle. The first impression with the work and the workplace is bound to improve the employee performance for the rest of the time at the workplace.
The mentor for the new employee should be directed to have a checklist. This will help him or her to run the orientation in a systematic manner. It should also have a professional time stipulation so that the employee can understand the procedures. The following is the list of things needed for the mentor. The mentor should ensure that he or she has: a clean and specific workplace set up for the purpose of employee orientation. Equipment for the intended work, Information on the reporting time, the correct steps in performing the stipulated work, information on the specific policies of the organization, work hours and their associated compensations, safety measures ad information about follow up programs.
The new employee has to be educated and made aware of the company mission statement. The employee will tend to understand the mission statement, and therefore he or she will get to know how he or she fits in. The vision of the organization should show the employee where the organization is headed and that he will be looking to work hard in order to achieve the target of his obligations. Specific job policies should be highlighted so as to avoid the employee from being stranded. This gives the employee a clear mind of what to expect, do and what not to indulge into at the workplace.
Since the basic step in handling system administration is to ensure that the whole system is in sync. I will test the employee through his ability to connect with his colleagues. I will give him or her the task to identify the individual work of each employee in the department by the end of the day. It means that at the end of the day, the new employee should give me the names and duty of his or her colleagues in the department. This is one way of familiarizing the employee with his or her fellow colleagues and understanding their work.
