According to James Paul Gee, there is a connection between an individual in the real world and whatever character he or she projects in a virtual world and for that reason, a third identity emerges in the form if the projective identity (48-50). In the author’s views, the summation of the tripartite play of identities, where the real world, virtual, and projective aspects of a gamer meet, is experiences that revolve around “active” and “reflexive” mannerisms by one controlling the same. Gee also reckons that the same experience is possible with movies and novels; thus emerges the nature of the required personal realm of experience. In other words, the concept is applicable merely because they are provable at a personal level. Movies in which one or more characters act stupid and elicit the need to slap some sense into said individual[s] and a sad scene that causes immense sorrow despite knowing the premise is fictional are evidence enough. However, the borderline obsession with the Rachel character if F.R.I.E.N.D.S take the crown. The woman’s antics were both frustrating and enjoyable, and it was as though the plot of her character was predictable. Now it turns out it was a “reflexive” feature coupled “active” parameters with which a viewer would look at his or her favorite character.
“Passive learning-rather than active, critical learning-will not lead to much power and empowerment in the contemporary world however much it may suit one for a low-level service job” (Gee 66). The line “glows” because it naturally promotes students to assume the roles for which they are studying as though they have attained the necessary qualifications. Law students ought to take on challenging arguments and make compelling cases as though they are in the Supreme Court and music students should be able to perform at all times and shed their inhibitions when doing so. In other words, the alternative rhetoric of an individual ought to come into play regardless of the expectations of others and the cultural norms that would convince them to act differently. To that end, the glow line stands out only because it works to encourage a practical approach towards learning and the acquisition of new ideas.
