First off, welcome to the next four years of your life. It will be days of ups and downs. Some days you will triumph and others you will want to bury your head under the covers. But as a freshman, you will get through it and you will be closer to becoming a stronger adult as you grow and mature throughout the next few years of your life. One day you will look back and not even recognize who you have become. You just need to remember that being a freshman is just a label. It does not completely define you but it just is a name that serves as a reminder that you are once again the low person on the totem pole of hierarchy in school. However, it will be okay because we all pay our dues. Every senior started out as a freshman.
As a senior, there are a few key pieces of advice I would like to offer an incoming freshman. While the list is actually a long one, I came up with three thoughts that I personally thought would be helpful. These are things that I wish someone had told me when I was entering high school as a new freshman in high school.
One of the first pieces of advice to offer an incoming freshman is one that will help you to investigate and determine what your interests are. You are given the chance to explore what it is that really makes you tick. Join everything and make the most out of it. You only get what you give. There are numerous activities that you can join. There is a wide diversity of extracurricular clubs and sports. Even if you are not an athlete, give it a try. Do not be afraid to try out for sports if they are your passion. However, do not be intimidated by other organizations. If you love Spanish, join the Spanish club. If you enjoy agriculture, join the FFA organization. It does not matter what it is that you enjoy, but explore what it is that you love. You will be surprised at how much you will learn in extracurriculars that you do not learn from textbooks. Plus, there are generally other opportunities to take trips or go to seminars where you can meet other students who are like-minded.
Ignore the mean kids. People will be mean and it is part of their own insecurities. It makes them feel power over you. It is not something that you can control but you can control how you react. Everyone in this phase of their life is having growing pains of some type. To hurt someone else unfortunately gives others satisfaction. Stay strong and believe in yourself and do not let anyone push you around. When you ignore what others have to say, you are ultimately gaining their respect. Puberty is hard on everyone and we all go through it at our own pace.
Always push yourself and try hard. The little quizzes will make a big difference on your grade point average in the long run. No one likes homework but you have to do it. When you start your high school career, your grades start to accumulate toward your graduating GPA. While a little slip here and there will impact your grades, try hard because in the end, your GPA will show up on your resume and transcript and will help you get into better colleges if that is your chosen path. Do not be afraid to ask teachers for help if you are starting to slip in some areas. This is the foundation for your future.
I hope that you find these tips useful. I hope that you make the most of your time here and for the next four years. It really is just a tiny baby step but still an accomplishment. Be prepared for the future, expect the unexpected, and remember to still have fun while you continue to study. Listen to your parents and teachers because they know more than you give them credit for. Most of all, enjoy the last four years of high school.
