Chaboyer, W., Mills, P. M., Roberts, S., & Latimer, S. (2015). Physical activity levels and torso orientations of hospitalized patients at risk of developing a pressure injury: An observational study. International Journal of Nursing Practice, 21(1), 11-17 7p. doi:10.1111/ijn.12188
The International Journal of Nursing Practice is a fully refereed journal that publishes original scholarly work related to nursing and focuses on professional dialogue and sound scientific research. This specific article is an observational study that looked at different pressure ulcer prevention activities, specifically, repositioning as a mechanism for reducing pressure ulcer injury. Researchers looked at patient and caregiver activities over a 24-hour period of time. Because the observed patients moved consistently, researchers suggested that good skin care, nutrition, and appropriate support surfaces be researched to determine efficacy in preventing pressure ulcer occurrences. Several research studies suggested reductions in pressure ulcers based on appropriate diet and other measures. This research also suggested that a precise mobility assessment be completed for patients with mobility issues. This assessment should occur prior to engaging in repositioning regimens for patients.
Chaboyer, W., & Gillespie, B. M. (2014). Understanding nurses' views on a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle: a first step towards successful implementation. Journal of Clinical Nursing, 23(23/24), 3415-3423 9p. doi:10.1111/jocn.12587
The Journal of Clinical Nursing is a peer-reviewed, international academic journal that encourages knowledge exchange regarding nursing practice. The goal of this article was to study nurses’ views about facilitators and barriers to a newly introduced, patient-centered pressure ulcer prevention care bundle. Researchers conducted a qualitative study in which conversational interviews were engage in and 20 nurses were interviewed. Interviews were audio-taped and themes were identified from the interviews. Because of the pressure ulcer tool, there were increasing levels of care intervention awareness as it relates to pressure ulcer and pressure ulcer prevention. There were several benefits identified in using the pressure ulcer care bundle tool including promoting active staff participation, and willingness to amalgamate the tool into nursing practice. The study found that this tool relates to clinical practice in that consistent implementation and the use of pressure ulcer prevention strategies reduces pressure ulcers overall and promotes active participation among nursing staff as it relates to the prevention of pressure ulcers.
Waugh, S. M. (2014). Attitudes of Nurses Toward Pressure Ulcer Prevention: A Literature Review. MEDSURG Nursing, 23(5), 350-357 8p.
MEDSURG Nursing is a peer-reviewed academic journal of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) that publishes evidence-based, multi-disciplinary articles related to excellent patient care designed to enhance nursing practice. This specific article was a literature review that used the theory of planned behavior to review research articles related to pressure ulcers. The researchers selected key terms and a specific search strategy to narrow down the articles for review. Seven studies were selected for review. The review included two qualitative and one quantitative study. The qualitative studies found that participants assigned a high value to pressure ulcer prevention and preemptive approaches were used to prevent these occurrences, environmental issues impeded prevention, efforts to prevent were typically assigned to nursing students, and nursing values influenced pressure ulcer prevention efforts. The quantitative studies reported that nurses had a positive attitude toward pressure ulcer prevention, there was support for new instrumentation of pressure ulcers, some knowledge about pressure ulcers was insufficient, pressure ulcer prevention was viewed as important, and RNs did not pay as much attention to pressure ulcer prevention.
FDA approves new Early Sense patient supervision system: the system now alerts medical staff regarding a patient's motion level and verifies patient turns as indicated by nurses, both of which are key elements in the prevention of pressure ulcers. (2010, Jun 21). McClatchy - Tribune Business News Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/504790090?accountid=45049
The article majors on the issue of contact free patient supervision system. The article describes an online way on how to monitor patient’s motion level. It also focuses on Identifying low patient movement and then turning patients methodically are key elements in the prevention of pressure ulcers, which Early Sense calls the most costly patient safety risk in US hospitals. In the article we get to know the various ways in which we can supervise ulcer patient without having a body contact. A sensor is placed under the mattress to regulate and supervise the patients’ activities. The nurses get to learn more about the patients without having direct contacts.
Gorecki, C., Lamping, D. L., Nixon, J., Brown, J. M., & Cano, S. (2012). Applying mixed methods to pretest the pressure ulcer quality of life (PU-QOL) instrument. Quality of Life Research, 21(3), 441-51. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11136-011-9980-x
The article focuses on the testing of ulcer in prior and the benefits of diagnosing ulcers prior any genuine symptoms. If ulcers are diagnosed in early stages then it can be treated effectively and very fast. The article is a research article and it focuses on the findings regarding early treatment and treatment at advance state. Findings from the Rasch analysis identified problems with response options through reversed thresholds. The use of a mixed-methods approach in pretesting the PU-QOL instrument proved beneficial for identifying problems with scale layout, response options and framing/wording of items. One can easily understand the findings from this research analyze them and come up with credible conclusion. The article advocate for prior diagnoses of the disease and treatment to be very effective. This is because the disease shall have not done so much damage to the body hence it can be controlled easily.
Enhanced surface dynamics, inc.; patent application titled "pressure monitoring system and method" published online. (2015). Medical Patent Business Week, , 3901. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/1658451331?accountid=45049
The article focuses on more information on how it affects the patient rather than just their background information. The focuses also focus on the pressure detection. How soon pressure can be detected. It is further noted that the system may further comprise a reset button via which the caregiver may reset the notification mechanism after repositioning the subject. Accordingly, where the pressure detection apparatus is configured to detect repositioning, the notification mechanism may be further operable to provide an alert if the reset button is activated without the subject being repositioned. The system should be able to detect and have reset baton for pressure detection.
Harrod, M., Kowalski, C. P., Saint, S., Forman, J., & Krein, S. L. (2013). Variations in risk perceptions: A qualitative study of why unnecessary urinary catheter use continues to be problematic. BMC Health Services Research, 13, 151. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1472-6963-13-151
The article analyses the general conditions of patents when they get admitted in hospitals. How patients should be treated while admitted in hospitals. The article also agrees to the fact that prior detection of diseases is very important in treating the disease. The reason is that at early stages the disease has not done much damage hence can be controlled effectively. The article is a research report on findings on how patients should be treated in hospitals. The findings are clearly explained and is easily understood by those trying to access them
Gandra, S. R. (2005). Development of a risk stratification tool for predicting hospitalization from macrovascular complications among diabetic patients in a managed care environment (Order No. 3209601). Available from ABI/INFORM Complete. (305362231). Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/305362231?accountid=45049
The article mainly talks about the diabetes and how it affects various patients. Diabetes just like ulcer is very difficult to treat. We can borrow ideas from this article and explain how efficient prior diagnosis of the diseases is important. The article uses split-sample validation to explain how diabetic people should be diagnosed prior and treated effectively. The same sample can be used to explain how pressure ulcer should be controlled.
Lapsley, H. M., & Vogels, R. (1998). Quality and cost impacts: Prevention of post-operative clean wound infections. International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, 11(7), 222-231. Retrieved from http://search.proquest.com/docview/229696240?accountid=45049
The article is a report article that focuses on how nurse treatment affects treatment. It also focuses on how wounds affect various patients. The nurse relation to patient is very important in the treatment recovery. The article also agrees to our major issue in our report. The major issue in our research is that early detection and diagnosis is very critical in treatment of the patient. The earlier the detection, the higher the chances of survival of a patient.
