Project managers use a variety of tools and techniques to manage project teams. Project managers commonly use Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and the Gantt chart to manage project teams. The PERT shows diagrammatically the sequence of project activities, how much time each activity will take, and the interrelationship between the various project activities (Maserang, 2002). The Gantt chart show the calendar time each task will take usually expressed in days, weeks, or months (Maserang, 2002). Gantt charts show diagrammatically for each activity the start time, the estimated time to complete the activity, and the time elapsed (Maserang, 2002).
The trend of virtual teams is gaining traction in the workplace and project managers have to horn their skills in managing team members working in remote locations. Byatt, Hodgkinson, and Hamilton (2010) contend that a member of a virtual team is more likely to feel isolated than a collocated worker. A project manager managing a virtual team should focus on four key elements. a. setting clear goals and expectations of the project, b. Manage communications through various platforms such as emails, instant messaging and conference calls, c. Keep people focused on the project through initiatives such as web meetings and follow ups, d. keep the virtual team members motivated (Byatt, Hodgkinson, & Hamilton, 2010).
Christian business managers can have a positive influence on their project team members by being honest, showing love, and seeking Christ’s guidance in managing the project (Mensah, 2010). Project management encompasses four main factors, the team members, the situation, the leader, and communication (Mensah, 2010). A Christian project manager should adhere to the Christian teachings that require them to first view themselves as a member of the team before being a project manager (Mensah, 2010). Then, they must gain an understanding of the situation and then communicate effectively what is required of the team members.
