Engineering is one of the disciplines that do not only require professional knowledge but also knowledge regarding ethical guidelines within the engineering fields. Ethical guidelines in this field are critical as they ensure that engineers act professionally and in a manner that does not jeopardize the health, safety as well as the well-being of humans and the environment. However, engineers as employees and professionals that offer services that have direct impact on the environment and humans also requires appropriate communication skills to enhance success in their work.
According to Cezer Ornatowski 1992, good communication including proper writing skills is crucial among professionals as it is associated with various benefits for example: Appreciation and promotion. The engineering field also entails a lot of decision making; majority of decisions are arrived at after engaging in a contract between engineers and their clients. In order to ensure that engineers communicate effectively to their clients, they need to apply relevant and appropriate communication skills to break down the technical language into a language that can be easily understood. Communication is an imperative aspect of operation various organizations, institutions and companies (Ornatowski, 93). In some cases, engineering organizations and institutions are compelled to make decisions that require several engineering stakeholders. However, the success of such decisions depends on how the information is disseminated and comprehended among engineers. Taking this factor into consideration, engineers that aspire to succeed in their careers require appropriate communication skills not only for purposes of enhancing communication between engineers and clients, but also among engineers. Ornatowski in her writing cites the work of Steven Pauley and Daniel Riordan who argue that technical writing skills are crucial in the current job market; in this regard, it is important to learn technical communication skills in order to enhance one’s success (Ornatowski, 92). Such skills encompass the skill to simply technical language into a language that can be comprehended by people who do not possess specific technical skills.
