He writes, “there is no dispute that what I said at lunch was lousy but I want to make you sure that I recognized that and felt horrible about it. Your friendship is more than any treasure for me. I hope, we will continue our life again soon”. The first line seeks to influence Mr. Turki Qathani’s thinking about the situation and make him recognize the fact that mistakes is bound to occur. The second line seeks to influence Mr. Turki Qathani and prevail upon him, albeit emotionally, to renew the friendship. The choice of the phrase “your friendship” (emotive language) and not “our friendship (non-emotive language) shows that emotional arousal can be achieved with connotation through a positive spin. Further by addressing the reader as ‘Dear Mr. Turki Qathani’ and not ‘Dear Sir’, underscore the desire to bring out the closeness and interpersonal relationship between them that needs to be guarded and maintained. While it may not be clear, the emotional language used, in this case, is aimed at convincing Mr. Turki Qathani that the writer is sorry and needs his trust back.
In conclusion, the persuasive nature of the appeal to emotion (pathos) is a plea for the audiences’ sense of identities, self-interests, and feelings. Pathos has the power to irk emotions and sway the audience’s mind. In the letter, elements of pathos are evident in terms of the persuasive power of the language used, the emotive nature of the language and the imaginative influence of the message therein on Mr. Turki Qathani, the audience. The power with which the message may move Mr. Turki Qathani, to a decision or an action is almost assured. The writer has given credible evidence of persuasion, a genuine feeling for the audience and understanding of the issue at hand.
