First of all, this essay does not meet college level writing. Right from the onset it is clear that the essay does not have a definite citation style. The author might have wanted to use MLA citation style but there are a few stylistic difficulties that he or she encountered. Some of these difficulties include the lack of page numbers and in text citations for information that is obtained from an external author other than the writer of the essay. Looking at the organizational structure of the essay, the author does not follow a logical order. It is difficult to identify the thesis of the paper, the body, and the conclusion.
The thesis of any paper should provide a clear road map of the important points that author intends to address in the paper. Instead of narrowing down in a definitive thesis statement, the writer of this essay uses the first paragraph as a continuation of observations that he or she has had regarding the research topic, in this case the Middle East. Due to the lack of a clear thesis statement, it is hard to follow the transition from the introductory paragraph to the body of the paper.
Focusing on the topic sentences, the writer does not use a set of words or a statements that infers back to the thesis statement. This is because the paper does not have a clear thesis statement in the first place. This makes the essay sound like a story and not like a scholarly piece that seeks to present a give line of argumentation. Despite the fact that the writer lacks strong topic sentences, the paragraph structure is up to standard for college level writing. This is because all paragraphs meet the threshold of four to eight sentences.
Looking at the transition of ideas in this paper, there is no apparent relationship between subsequent paragraphs. It seems as if the author did not have a solid outline that could have allowed him or her to organize his or her ideas in a logical manner. The writer does not employ any kickers, in the essay to draw the attention of the reader. In some cases, the author employs generalist statements that in some degree makes the essay to lose credibility. For example, the writer uses statements such as “some people think.” Readers would like to know who are these people being referred to as “some people.”
In conclusion, this essay lacks a solid conclusion that ties or the concepts presented in the paper together. There is no apparent relationship between key ideas presented in the paper and the thesis statement. In addition, there is a stylistic difficult in the part of the writer because the essay ends in a direct quote that does not even give credit to the author. It is stylistically wrong to end a paragraph in a direct quote. In a nutshell, this essay does not meet college level writing. The lacks organizational, stylistic, and grammatical competence. It is my view that the assignment at hand was not accorded the seriousness it deserved.
