Part B: Report Technology Invention
Technology is the application of knowledge in assistance of human life, alternatively changing and manipulating the human environment. A tablet PC is a single unit that has cameras, sensors, touchscreen, keyboard, mouse and a microphone. Unlike traditional computers, it is portable and smaller than a laptop. The tablet offers all the functionalities of a PC with the added advantage of being extra light. Furthermore, its battery life far outlasts that of the laptop. Hence, one can go for a long period without having to charge it. In terms of pricing, they are relatively cheap than traditional laptops, hence more bang for the buck. Normal PCs, usually, crash and lose data or cost a lot to recover the lost data, but tablets simply require a reboot and everything is back to normal, just as they were.
The tablet PC’s conceptualization was way back in 1968 by Alan Kay. He noted that the developments in flat panel display technology, miniaturization of computer components, advancements in Wi-Fi technology and user interfaces would result in an all-encompassing device. He made sketches that resemble the modern day tablet computers and called it the Dynabook. He foresaw a touchscreen capability that would do away with physical keyboards. Years later, the GRiDPad came into existence, mimicking the Dynabook.
The tablet has indeed changed the workplace environment in terms of operations and interactions. In the modern day workplace, people can conduct their work more easily. Checking and responding to emails can be done on the go. Presentations have become simpler with people loading them to tablets and moving in between meetings or sharing with other colleagues. Conference calls, including video can occur from anywhere, given there is an internet connection. Disseminating of company bulletins has been made easier and fun, as employees can receive information as they get released even when not at their work stations. In terms of socializing, they can keep in touch on the various social networking platforms, and this cement their organizational culture. In conclusion, adoption of technology has made work easier and more enjoyable.
