It is so true that the experiences that we live can often evoke a memory. Sometimes the perfect song, the last touch of a loved one, a baby’s sweet smile, a movie scene, or other type of experience can be something that we pick up on subliminally and other times, we can experience it by being mindful of it. It is kind of like people who never stop to smell the roses. It is an experience that everyone has had but people are often not mindful enough to let the senses take it in and resonate. When we pay close attention to experiences like this, they start to elicit feelings, emotions, and oftentimes, even memories. Through the use of smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound, we can be mindful of the experience and it is then that it starts to become more meaningful to us.
One thing that I like to experience is the sound of the ocean. By being at the beach, I can smell the salt water. I can feel the sand between my toes and the sea spray upon my face. I can actually take the experiences I have had at the ocean and even transpire myself back to that experience through the use of memory. I can hear the children laughing on the beach, flying kites high in the air. I can hear the crash of the big waves. I can feel the seaweed through my toes while wading deep in the water. I can feel the sensation of the sun beating down on my skin and warming it.
I can remember the first time I went to the ocean. It was with my family. The feeling of those senses and for those to come back to me even as I envision them, help to bring back the memory. Every time that I go to see the ocean, I can still remember the first time that I was ever there. It evokes happy memories for me. It provides me with a sense of a happy time where our family created memories. It takes me back to a more carefree time in my life. Every time I start to think about the ocean, I can literally feel myself being sucked in and I can close my eyes and still feel the sunshine beating down on my face. I start to feel relaxed. It is like a guided imagery adventure except that it is one that I have actually lived rather than completely imagined. My perception of the times that I have been to the ocean creates happy and feel-good memories. They have been locked up in my memory and can be recalled when I think about it. If I see the ocean on television or read about it in the book, I can almost transport myself to sitting on the beach or wading through the water. The water is a little cold and the soft sand is hot on my feet as I sink in with each step but I am cooled off as soon as I step into the waves. The experiences that I have had while visiting the ocean have typically been pleasurable ones and some that are relaxing. Just thinking about these sensations in order to discuss them lets me reach into my brain to pull out the memories that I can recall. While another family member’s perception of a beach trip might be different, I have a different recollection that is completely unique to me due to the way that I processed the information that I was gathering with my senses.
When we use our senses, we are collecting information. We then use that information to store memories. We then can recall those memories when the time arises. The sensation that I feel is one that is peaceful, calm, and serene and it has everything to do with the warmth of the sunshine, the sounds of the waves crashing in almost a hypnotic way, and the smell of salt water filling my nose. Someone else’s perception may be completely different because they have used their senses and have different memories and are able to recollect different perceptions of their experience of the ocean. While some people might think have been focused on the chaos of too many people at the beach, I was able to black that out and focus on other sensations that provided me with a joyful and relaxing feeling. For me, it is a pleasurable experience and I am fortunate to have all of my senses. We all have different sensations that we focus on more than others. Due to those initial sensations and sometimes even first impressions, we have a different perception due to the memories that the senses have provoked within our brains which helps us to recollect memories.
