The Nature of things programmed to be Fat is a movie that discusses the aspect of chemicals that cause obesity. Professor Legler is a scientist whose unexpected findings made him continue the research work with a Scot doctor on the reasons why she was not losing weight. The Scot doctor had discovered that her condition was caused by some chemicals. She had suggested several chemicals that caused her not to reduce weight. The chemicals she suggested causing obesity are called Obesogens. Obesogens are endocrine-disrupting substances such as tribuline, nicotine, pesticide DDT(dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), BPA(Bisphenol A), polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins are harmful facilitators of the obesity epidemic (The Nature of Things Programmed to be Fat, 2015).
First, pesticide DDT is a chemical that makes people grow fat. The pesticide DDTchemical was tested using a mouse to determine how it affects human beings. The results indicated that the mouse added weight when exposed to DDT doses. These results were similar to those of a mouse that was exposed to BPA chemical doses. BPA is another chemical that causes obesity. However, both the doctor and the researchers wanted to establish different methods that reduce the impact of chemicals causing obesity. They discovered that the chemicals causing obesity could be found in cans, plastics, water, food we eat and nicotine smoking.
Secondly, Dioxins is another chemical that causes obesity. This chemical can be passed to new born through the mother’s breast milk. It is hence easy to pass obesity-causing chemicals to young ones. The movie shows that scientists have moved away from doing tests using animals. They now use human beings to check how chemical exposure causes a global obesity epidemic. The tests results of the chemicals have proved to have similar effects to both humans and animals.
It is important to develop ways of controlling obesity due to the danger faced by obese people around the world. Canada is a good example with a large number of obese people. In the last thirty years, obesity has doubled with around fifty-nine percent of the population being seen as fat. The findings were because of a change in people’s life style that exposes them to obesity-causing chemicals. The only problem with this research is the use of human beings in doing real tests instead of using animals. The use of human beings can be dangerous since they are exposed to some tests that may be damaging to their bodies leading to a health problem.
As a conclusion, Man-made chemicals are very harmful to people, and should be used carefully. If people continue using the chemicals, in future there are high chances of many people with multiple obesities. The scientists hence are focused on ways of preventing that involve treating all chemicals as obesity causing suspect and trying to prove which are not harmful.
