Good Example Of Essay On The Progress And Regress Of Women’s Rights Movement

In Coleman’s (2004) article entitled “The Payoff from Women’s Rights,” it was mentioned that women’s rights have been advancing in the United States of America in the 21st century but the movement is still considered as subversive. This community reception regarding women’s rights pushed the international and domestic communities to work harder for the advancement of the movement. During Bush’s administration, it was found out that there is a significant improvement in terms of women participation in education and in the economy. Women empowerment according to their analysis helped a lot in nation building. Educating women has been found out to be better in return of investment than educating men. In the 2000 Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, programs are focused on women as it was found out that they are the catalyst to improve poverty, health situation, improving nutrition, decreasing HIV among many others. Empowering the women will contribute to achieving the MDGs.
Today, the MDGs were already changed into Sustainable Development Goals but the target is still the women. It can be said that the programs targeting the empowerment of women are results of the long running struggle on women’s rights. In the international community, the word women empowerment is already a buzz. All the international development agencies are including women empowerment in their indicators and have focus programs on women.
If I am given a chance to sit with the author, I would like to ask her regarding the reality of women empowerment in the grassroots level especially in the third world.While there are already tons of research regarding women empowerment in the 1st world, patriarchy is still very strong in the developing world. It would be interesting to include in the article the plights of rural women and urban poor women in the developing world who are usually targets of various empowerment projects that are funded by the aid.
