All of a sudden, I found myself thinking sociologically when I saw a boy holding a toy, standing by his father who was busy mopping the floor of the mall. The sweeper was the child’s father was driven by thinking sociologically. I came to this conclusion by seeing the manner in which the child was looking up to his father. While all his age-fellows were probably in his father brought school at that hour, this child to work probably because there was nothing to eat at home and by bringing him to work, the father could ensure that his child was fed. Thinking from a sociological perspective, I started to wonder about the role that social structure plays in one’s life.
We take many things for-granted in life. However, a closer look clarifies that it all depends on our position in the social structure. From the kind of neighborhood we live in, till the kind of educational opportunities we get, is determined by our social class. In other words, our life chances are affected by these factors. The economic status of our family plays the largest part in determining the opportunities we get in life. This does not mean that individuals cannot break these boundaries in order to shape their own life chances. The concept of personal responsibility still applies. These factors are major influences or constraining factors in our choices.
As I began to delve in further, I found myself pondering over everything I saw as a sociologist. It amazed me how, just by changing the lens, I started to understand the world in a manner I had never experienced before.
