Nursing informatics is a science which incorporates the nursing practice and knowledge and information related to it with the management of communication and information with the efforts directed at the promotion of the health of persons, their families, and the communities that they come from as a whole (Troseth, 2012). The objective of incorporating nursing informatics into the nursing profession is directed at making achievements in the area of patient-centered care.
Nursing informatics plays an important role in the nursing profession since it serves the purpose of having desirable outcomes from any particular care practice. In this line, therefore, informatics is significant in the sense that it represents the concepts which are useful in the process of supporting evidence-based practice, education and research (Explore Health Careers, 2016). Informatics also plays a critical role in setting communication and data standards which are crucial in creating a structure of interoperable data infrastructure for the country. Thirdly, nursing informatics assist in the developing research methodologies which are useful in disseminating new knowledge in the nursing profession. Fourthly, it also supports an easy presentation of information in addition to their retrieval to assist in safe patient care. Furthermore, it plays the role of developing management and visions for the development of communication and information technologies and their implementation (Explore Health Careers, 2016). Lastly, informatics plays a significant role in advancing healthcare policies with the aim of advancing public health efforts.
Currently, as a RN, the expertise that I have concerning the application of informatics in my area of practice is handicapped by the fact that I don’t have the valuable skills and knowledge to address issues pertaining the development of strategic plans, creation of operational policies and procedures and acting in positions like solving complex projects that require one to have knowledge of information technology.
