Every society in the world has its virtues and vices, which define the way its people live and behave. A society marked with fairness; equality and justice is prone to produce individuals who are calm at mind, peaceful and satisfied with their lives. Along with this mental peace comes societal peace with none or lowered crime rates, and people living harmoniously amongst each other. Such a society also carries immense trust amongst the individuals as well as the leaders of the state.
As far as America, the land of opportunity is concerned, not all is as picturesque as it seems. Seemingly, fair, the underlined society is riddled with unfairness and inequality. This has been the dilemma of this nation since its conception until the present day. Two main issues highlighting this unjust country are racism and social stratification or class difference.
America’s social classes include those who are the occupants of the highest strata, enjoying all social opportunities and privileges, which makes them ‘more equal’ than members of lower classes who cannot afford living a lavish life. This produces a sense of deprivation and unnecessary need for wealth and materials, be they out of their buying power or social needs. Hence as the lower classes lookup to their upper ones, they strive for wealth by any means. The U.S Consensus Bureau claimed that 16% of the population lived in poverty. To eliminate poverty, people take resort in crimes. The reason for this stands the economic instability, frustration and want of social prestige, which they are much deprived of. In addition, lack of good parenting amongst this class, parents working full time for a living and their children following pursuit, leads to a higher rate of instability in the lives of these people. However, it is not only the lower classes, but also the upper class, which is involved in white-collar crimes, all for the race in which they are involved- gather more money. Yet the ones who are caught and are trialed for various crimes are always the citizens of lower strata since they have no means to save themselves from this vicious cycle of favoritism and injustice.
Another issue that has gripped the social order of America is the menace of racism. Racism has existed in this society since quite a long time and although valiant efforts have been made in the past and even today to get rid of this altogether, yet there exist some elements in society that will not let go of it. The biggest example of this is a job issue. The Caucasian will be favored over an African-American citizen. This has led to sheer hatred amongst the various people in society and this deliberate discrimination over color of skin is not only unfair but also hurtful. The number of unemployed black citizens is almost double to that of unemployed whites, with whites being 5% whilst blacks lingered on a 9.9%. This difference means a lack of sustenance for a race of people who can potentially bring many benefits to the nation. The color of the skin does not testify one’s skills or capacity. When this difference is not realized, it leads to chaos amongst the society.
In the past, the crime rate has accelerated due to the frustration and feeling of being an unequal citizen has caused black on white crime rate to increase manifold, reaching almost 10000 in a few decades. This outcome was called for since there remains no other way to vent one’s bottled emotions at the hands of misfortune and burden of earning. This unfair society distorts the outlook of the country, causing confusion and disorder.
