Good Example Of Essay On Weaknesses In Writing Legal English And What I Hope To Improve

I have a few weaknesses in writing English and specifically writing in legal English. I have challenges, choosing the most appropriate words to use in writing legal papers. In addition, I have challenges in distinguishing between words that are ought to be used when wring legal paper and those words that are not suitable for use in such papers.
I have learnt that legal language is more difficult compared to ordinary English because one should be clear and avoid using any words that may bring about confusion or wrong interpretations. Many of the words used in legal writing appear similar or have related meanings and I am unable to select properly the best word to use in a given situation. For instance, I face challenges whenever I am supposed to use words like annulment, adjournment, acquittal, termination among others because all of them seem to have a similar meaning. I may be intending to say something, but my challenges in selecting the most appropriate word hinder me from feeling confident in expressing myself in legal English.
I have also learnt that there are words that are not applicable in legal writing and I face a challenge in differentiating between such words and words that are recommended for legal writing. For instance, the word “domicile” and not “home” should apply much when one means to talk about the permanent home of a person. The majority of these words is difficult and not commonly used and this gives me a big challenge whenever I am required to use them in writing.
There are several things I hope to improve in this class with regard to my writing. First, I want to improve my ability to write in legal language. I love legal language and I consider it fully expressive because words are carefully chosen to avoid confusion and give clear meanings. I will read more materials written in legal English so that I familiarize myself with words that currently pose a challenge. I will also make use of a good dictionary to check out the meanings of words that pose challenges. In addition, I will pair up with a friend who is good in legal English so that he can help me in my weal areas. I believe that with more practice, I will improve my legal writing greatly. In line with this, I will write more short cases and have them reviewed by someone who is good in legal writing.
I also want to learn how to write a memo. Although I understand the format of writing a memo, I need to polish up some issues such as paragraphing, tenses to use and the usage of first, second and third person when writing memos. I believe that the person I choose to team up with and my tutors will also guide me on how to write good memos suited for the legal world.
Moreover, I need to improve in how I analyze cases. I want to learn how to go through a case and pick all the important details such as the complaint, details the accused and the accuser, laws applicable in the case, the sentence among others. Moreover, I need to understand cases in a way that I can explain them in simpler, layman language to people who may not understand legal language.
Overall, I need to improve my writing in legal style in any angle possible. I need to feel at ease expressing myself in legal language. I need to learn how to organize my thoughts and give supporting details to my original or initial remarks. I believe that speaking in it whenever I am required to do so is a huge step to improving my overall mastery of legal English.
