In his book “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”, Nietzsche does introduce the three remarkable metamorphoses in a philosophical manner. These metamorphoses basically describe the process that we undergo during spiritual transformation, which characterize Nietzsche’s vision of a flourishing life. Perhaps we hardly think or regard Nietzsche as a great “spiritual” philosopher. Nonetheless, has put by Nietzsche, the story of the three metamorphoses is purely as spiritual transformation saga. He symbolically represents the phases of spiritual metamorphosis with the camel, the lion, and the child.
A camel, in this case is used to describe and depict the scene that allows for the naïve quest for wisdom and knowledge that often lead us to the most disturbing and darkest times of our lives. In life, at one point or another, we might have been “the camels of this world” by taking on labors of philosophical insights. Very eager and enthusiastic to prove our capabilities by embracing the truth, we then seek for the most burdening and heaviest thinking, thus forcing ourselves to dwell in environments or circumstances with the belief that they form part of a passage rite for each and every human being. What is heavy? That asks for a weight-bearing spirit; hence kneeling down like camels in readiness for proper loading. In short, Nietzsche has described the spirit of the camel as that which is has a collection of burdens, scars, and conquests. Instead, the camel asks; “what is it that is heaviest, so I can take it on me and have joy in my strength”. We all know that camels have the tendency of carrying heavy loads and end up suffering in the deserts. As always, the weighted person is forcefully taxed by his/her burdens. As time passes by, they are at risk of being poisoned by bitterness, revenge spirit and despair. The moment the camel fails to become the lion, their quest will ultimately ruin their desire.
The second metamorphosis occurs as the spirit of the lion. The lion, as we all know is ever interested in capturing freedom and being a lord in its own desert. Being a lion means becoming the “king of the beasts”. The spirit of the lion is that of ‘I will” spirit, which is practically the law in its fullness. In order to complete all the three metamorphoses, the lion finally becomes the child. For Nietzsche, maturity means reaching the point of rediscovering the seriousness that was exhibited as a child who is at his/her play. Of course, a child-like spirit is essential for values such as happiness, well-being and health. Again this child-like spirit values the innocence of perpetual creation and the joy of life.
On the judgment of taste, for a judgment to be regarded as that of taste, there has to be two primary conditions; subjectivity and universality. Subjectivity in this context implies that judgment of taste is focused on feelings of displeasure or pleasure. For, example, judgments such as ugliness and beauty are classic examples of judgment of taste. It is important to note that judgments of taste can be directed at nature or art. However, to see what makes beauty special, our focus must then shift back and consider what is unique about judgment of taste. According to Nietzsche, judgment of taste would demand “universal validity” i.e, it requires or demands an agreement to be made by others which perhaps falls within their tastes and preferences but, in matters relating to beauty and taste we think and hope that others share in our thoughts and judgments. It is for this reason that we tend to blame others when they judge things differently or in manners that do not meet our expectations.
