Another name for explanatory essays is expository essays. They require the learners to investigate ideas, the evaluated evidence, expounding on the ideas and also setting an argument concerning that idea which should be done in a clear and in a concise manner. They give answers to questions. Facts are also provided in these types of essays.
Parts of speech are words used when writing. Some of them are nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives. Nouns are used for people, animals, places, things and ideas. Verbs are the action words which tell us what the subject in the sentence is up to. Adjectives are the describing word. They describe the nouns like people, places, things or the state of being. Adverbs are words that tell us where, when, how or to what extent an action is performed. Similes show the similarities between two different things while metaphors make a hidden comparison between two things which are not similar but they have some common characteristics. Personification is used when one is giving the human qualities to objects or animals (Levin 10). All these are used in an expository essay.
A paragraph is a series of sentences. The first word of every sentence is indented. There are types of paragraphs which are used in writing these essays. The comparison paragraphs are those that give the similarities between people, places or things. The contrast paragraphs give the differences between people, places or thing. The third type is the explanatory paragraphs which are used in describing and explaining variety of things (Levin 50).
A good essay must have a thesis statement. The statement should be a complete sentence appearing at the end of the first paragraph which is the introduction. It should express an attitude or an opinion which is similar to the topic sentence. It should also be arguable. One should write several paragraphs to prove this statement. It should have only one idea that controls it (Levin 123). This statement should be catchy to make the reader interested. It should come at the end of the first paparagraph.
A good explanatory essay should have all these important things. All the points given should be clear and well explained. One should only focus on the thesis statement. These essays should answer the questions where, when, who and how.
