Fred Moseley. "The U.S. economic crisis | International Socialist Review." N.p., 20 Jan. 2009. Web. http://isreview.org/issue/64/us-economic-crisis
In 2009, the U.S economy experienced its worst disaster since the Great Depression. The article discusses the causes of the crisis, how bad it was and the various policies the government implemented to end it. The major cause of the crisis was the decline in the rate of profits. The rate of profit declined from 22% in 1970s to 12% in 2009. This resulted to high inflations and unemployment rates, therefore reducing the consumers’ purchasing power. As a result, the government had to adapt strict monetary policies that increased the rates of profits and helped in restoring the situation.
The U.S. home mortgage market has undergone a transformation. It has allowed the extension of mortgages to low income earners. Banks have been extending credits to people who are not credits worthy. This has affected hedge funds, foreign investors and pension funds. The author uses strong words and phrases such as “in their own portfolio,” “origination fees,” “securitization,” and “capitalism” to express the seriousness of the topic and its effects to the world economy.
The article uses strong terms and illustrations to vehemently explain the importance and seriousness of the economic crisis. It regularly uses statistics, ethos, pathos and logos to catch the attention of the reader and help them understand the topic. However, it fails to answer many questions that gyrate in the mind of the reader when reading the article. All in all, it is a great article to read.
