Certain experiences in one’s life can be counted as transformative experiences as they have greater meaning and impact on the future life of that person. One of such experiences in my life relates to a period when I had spent with my friends. I had always considered that seeking others’ help or suggestions for solving our problems was a sign of cowardice and weakness.
When I was 20 years old, I had a chance to camp with my friends in the woods near my home city Ufa. We proceeded with the decision of camping expecting a favorable weather. Soon, contrary to our expectations, rains hit the place and the weather became unbearably cold. Every one of us got into the tent and crept into our sleeping bags to fight the cold. But the cold grew in strength that all of us were freezing. I couldn’t feel my fingers, my lips turned blue. All of us were freezing to death as the cold rain was not subsiding but gaining strength with passing time. The only way to survive the horrible cold was by moving as close to each other as possible and getting warm. We made a ‘warm blanket’. After half an hour, we were feeling comfortable and we could sleep peacefully. This incident didn’t give me much thought during that time. But afterwards, the realization dawned upon me that if my friends weren’t friendly enough and hadn’t supported each other during that difficult time, something bad would have happened. Just because we all had stayed and acted together at that moment of hardship, everyone could remain healthy afterwards.
When I consider my own case, that incident had changed my perspective about life and friendship. As a result, today I am a new person with a different outlook.. That experience proved to me the need of friends and the importance of friendship in one’s life. I found that friends and friendship were as precious as our own family. I also could earn friends who would support me at times of difficulty. From that time on I started to cherish friendliness in any person. I also realised that the positive, self-fulfilling expectation about others, which is the feature of true friendliness, enhances the richness of personal relationships. I am not a highly self –centred person as I was in my younger days. I realised that if I have a problem that I am unable to solve by myself, I can rely on my friends for help. I can do the same if any one among my friends gets in trouble and need some help. Friendliness has becomes an integral part of my personality as well as my inner moral code. Not only that I have a lot of good friends, but also I am happier and more contented than I were in my younger days. The magic of friendship has brightened my life together with my personality.
