IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP
Sleep is an important need in a person’s life and lack of it may have adverse effects in the normal functioning of the body. In colleges lack of enough sleep have been found to highly contribute to poor performance this is because college students use their time partying. Research has shown that those students who don’t sleep enough have the same effects as those who drink and smoke bang (Agus 20). Lack of sleep has been found to contribute towards some academic problems which include dropping out of class and poor performance. If the students would reduce the time they use in other activities and improve their sleeping habits then it follows that their academic success would be assured. Administrators would do well to put mechanisms in place that would help in ensuring that the students realize the importance of sleep in their academic improvement. It could be in the form of ensuring that there are no school activities taking place past a particular time within the school premises.
Most campuses have enough programs and facilities that will help a student in their normal learning so as to ensure academic excellence. These services range from recreational and wellness centres, class rooms, libraries, career development centres and trips (academic and non academic). All these are aimed at ensuring an all rounded student (Agues 34). The problem is that most students hardly make use of these facilities instead they leave the premises of the college in search of recreation and most of the times forget to catch up on their studies and when they do they are forced to sacrifice their sleep time and this has proven to be disastrous as many students have found themselves sleeping in an examination room. The services offered at these facilities range from academic support, mentorship, counselling, sports, recreation and talent development. These facilities are highly accessible as long as you are a student in the college and some of the recreational activities and sports only need you to register for them.
Most college students do not realize the toll lack of sleep takes on their academic performance. Students would be advised to avoid staying up all night as sleep is essential to one’s academic improvement, physical fitness and mental health. Checking on the sleeping patterns is also vital, going to sleep early and waking up at the early does one well. If there are other distractions that prevent one from sleeping well it will do good to try and find ways to get rid of them. This though should not include taking pills to either stay up late or get better sleep as they prevent you from being alert for school work.
If students are careful not to interfere with their sleep patterns there is a great possibility that there will be significant academic improvement. There is sufficient time for both sleep and study as long us our time is properly used.
