The legalization of gay marriages has become a polarizing issue in the social, political, and religious fronts in the United States and across the borders. Different states in the United States have taken independent conflicting stance on the legalization of gay marriages. Seventeen states have legalized gay marriages while 33 other have considered such marriages unlawful. While some people believe that, gay partners should get equal chances in the society to express their social orientations, others consider such marriages to contradict the traditional definitions of the institution of marriage. These opponents believe that the traditional definition of the institution of marriage as the relationship between a man and a woman to serve the purposes of companionship, child bearing and rearing. They also consider gay marriages to contradict the cultural, traditional, and ethical formations of the society. This paper provides an argumentative perspective of the legalization of gay marriages in the state of Florida, which outlawed gay marriages because of its statute, which define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
Every member of the society has the right to express their views, opinions, and thoughts without restrictions, provided that these expressions do not infringe the rights of other members of the society. Denying the gay partners the right to express their sexual orientations in Florida States infringes on their rights to act in their interests. A famous argument is that, ‘if you are against gay marriages, then do not marry a gay person’. This asserts that these gay partners do not interfere with the other members of the society, especially the heterosexual members of the society because they do not marry the latter. According to the Socratic speeches about love, Aristophanes’ speech about love explains why some people are gay; others are lesbians, and others still heterosexual. Drawing form this philosophical assertion, the sexual orientations are genetically instigated, which implies that people do not have control over their sexual orientations. However, some scientific research disputes this assertion claiming that there is no proven causation relationship between genetics and sexual orientation. They assert that being gay or not being gay is a behavioral trait, which can be managed by the individuals.
Religious institutions also have varied arguments about the legalization of gay marriages in the state of Florida and other regions of the world. The most recent religious on the legalization of gay marriages was the proclamation of Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, who challenged his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI claiming that he is not God to judge gay couples. United Church of Christ also notably affirmed equal marriage rights to its members regardless of their gender even though it barred its ministers from performing these marriages. Following these religious controversies, nailing the exact argument of the Christian community has become controversial and complicated. Therefore, considering one side of the argument to disallow gay marriages in Florida would infer that the decision taken is a partisan decision.
Culture is one of the revered components of the society. The African American society has been considered the most culturally conservative members of the American society. According to different surveys conducted in different states based on racial and ethnic orientations, the African Americans oppose gay marriages with the highest percentage of all other ethnicities. This has been considered as a means of cultural conservativeness. In this regard, gay marriages do not hold enough ground to be legalized in the state of Florida. However, there are several ethnic communities in Florida State, who have conflicting views on the issue of gay marriages. Therefore, outlawing gay marriages in the state of Florida in favor of cultural preservation of the African American community would infringe on the freedoms of the other ethnic communities. This brings back the former idea of avoiding marrying a gay person if you are not gay. While the other ethnic communities would be exercising their constitutional right of marriage, the African Americans would not be forced to follow cultural practices that contradict their own practices.
The gay marriages do not have much of the political perspective apart from rallying support during campaigns. Candidates either support or oppose gay marriages to gain political command and status. The gay couples constitute a minority in every state in the United States including the Florida States. Therefore, they would not benefit from political representation if numbers were to count. In this regard, the interest identity politics would not favor them since their numbers cannot support their interest against the heterosexual couples in a fair vote. In the American history, the House of Representatives and the Senate have enacted legislations such as the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” act that was later repealed with the efforts of the same political institution. These political efforts have been aimed at creating equality in the political terrain as well as protecting the rights of the minorities. In my opinion, gay couples should not be subjected to legislative voting because their chances of triumphing in such election appear diminished. Instead, politicians should appoint marriage specialists to handle the matter and suggest solutions to the legislative body responsible for such enactments. The body of specialists should include representatives from different sectors including a representative of the gay community, and without preempted or anticipated results. In my view, sane people would not have a reason to deny members of the society their sexual rights, which are independent of their opponents’ sexual orientations.
In conclusion, I believe the state of Florida should legalize gay marriages. These gay partners are exercising their freedom of expression and do not override the freedoms of other heterosexual partners. However, on the religious, social, and cultural stances, gay marriages bring cultural decay in the society, distort social relationships between different cultures, and contradict the traditional and religious definitions of marriage as the relationship between a man and a woman aimed at bearing and rearing children as well as companionship. Nevertheless, the gay marriages are independent of the opponents’ assertions since the gay couples have equal rights to exist and co-exist in the society. The famous quote that, “if you are not gay, then do not marry a gay person sums up all the argument, which implies that the gay couples do not interfere with your marriage to your partner because they do not want to marry heterosexual members of the society.
