I believe NYU’s rigorous curriculum is necessary in order for me to become a knowledgeable dentist. NYU offers a great clinical experience, which is one of the main reasons I am applying to NYU. One of my goals is to serve those who are deprived. I believe that NYU’s diverse patient pool would help me attain this goal as I would be able to provide services to many that are medically underserved and from vulnerable populations. Ultimately, NYU would help me to not only grow as a dentist but as an individual. The robust city and NYU’s large class size will allow me to interact with people from all over the world of various backgrounds and cultures. I believe that interacting with people from many different backgrounds is necessary to build stronger relationships between me and my clients. Building stronger rapport with a patient is essential to building trust for any dentist. As a result, NYU would help me achieve my goal of being an open and diverse dentist.
2. What accomplishments do you feel set you apart from other applicants?
My greatest accomplishment is being aware of my sense of self. I have been fortunate enough to travel to third world countries to gain a better perspective of the world that surrounds us. Traveling to places such as India, China, Japan, and Egypt has helped me learn more about the workings of the world as well as more about myself. Born and raised in Colombia for 10 years, I am not new to the hardships of the real world. The disadvantages of the economically poor and their strength and adversity is admirable. I know what it is like living in a country filled with poverty, so I have a strong sense of understanding and knowledge about my well-being and that of others. As a result of these experiences, I am able to work in any environment and feel comfortable learning different languages. Although I am fluent in Spanish and English, I can understand and read some Japanese. Also I have been allowed to partake in high contact sports like Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu which has allowed me to remain calm and patient in high stress situations. Through these experiences, I am able to remain calm in the midst of adversity.
3. Tell us something about your undergraduate experience that you would change and why.
During my undergraduate years, I wanted to enjoy the college experience such as joining clubs, meeting new people, and playing sports. As a result, I decided to enroll in fewer classes to fully enjoy my undergraduate experience, and I thought graduating in more than four years would not be a problem. I also did not enroll in many summer classes as I wanted to travel and spend quality time with my family and friends. Ideally enrolling in fewer classes should have resulted in higher grades and made me competent. I thought I would have extra time to study if I wasn’t enrolled in many classes, but in contrast I became occupied with other activities instead. As a result, my grades dropped. Looking back, I would enroll in more courses each semester as I could have had a meaningful undergraduate experience without compromising my education. Unfortunately, taking the extra time to graduate meant more debt for my parents and myself. It also prolonged my dream of going to dental school. By enrolling in more courses, I could have decreased my education debt, focused on my aspirations, and enjoyed quality time during smaller breaks. It could have also provided me a head start on applying to dental school.
