As a rule, speaking rate is not similarly perceived in different media. The general stereotype is the following: fast-speakers are more persuasive for a number of reasons, among which is the fact that it is hard to keep up with the enormous avalanche of facts and information they are pouring over the unprepared audience. Moreover, fast speaking creates the halo of confidence and profound expertness in the subjects. Similar impression makes the man from the FedEx commercial, who annoyingly inspires the belief of his professionalism and utterly effective time management skills. On the negative side, of the above-mentioned skill is the fact that it is hard to convince people to treat you favorably since the very sentence of yours makes them struggle managing to cope with such a rate of speech. Furthermore, this kind of gift of the gab is more likely to be considered a mark of nasty salesman and oily politicians.
No surprise that it is the ad that made John Moschitta (the guy from the ad) famous, since any practical applicability of the skill is disputable. Frankly speaking, the point of the ad was cunningly depicted by the means of the plot of the commercial. Needless to mention that in the air time, where each second is literally priceless, high rate of speech served both the idea of the commercial and the peculiarities of the medium.
This phenomenon in ad and radio business has its name and it is usually referred to as time-compressed speech. A similar approach is practiced in ads for presenting the same thing in oppositely different ways.
Practice using visualization and descriptive language. Think of an everyday object, such as a chair or a kind of food, and describe it in as many ways as possible.
