Introduction
In every aspect of the organization, leadership and management communication plays a significant role towards the success of every member and the company as a whole in terms of achievement and development. The success of the organization lies within the supervision of its leader. The leader supports the organization through his or her genuine commitment to guide his people or subordinates appropriately. His guidance is greatly focusing on the objectives on how to sustain fully for the benefit of every employee and the entire organization. Specifically, the manager itself directs every role assigned and designed to enhance the skills of the employees and to evaluate the performances as designated accordingly. Managers are the leaders of any organization; however, not all managers exhibit the attitude or characteristic of leadership.
There are many definitions of leadership associated with management; it depends on how a leader acts in a given situation and the things considered as part of leadership. There is a distinction between leadership and management as a formal authority. Leadership is clearly delivered through communication. The leaders communicate aggressively about the necessary changes, translate every intention into clear reality, suggest new ideas or strategies, and assist to sustain actions that strictly support the decisions implemented. The ability of a leader to influence is based on the credibility, analysis and technical skills, and the competence in communication. A leader occupies a specific role or position while leadership is the construction and negotiation of meanings that supports any actions intended in the organization. Management fulfills the designed roles designed to facilitate the performances of the employees in the organization that supports the organizational objectives. In terms of the rationale of this topic on leadership and management communication, I can share my personal experience related to the leadership during work. The exploration of the topic leads me to relate on the importance of leadership and management communication in the organization.
In 1993, the International Medical Center or IMC was conceived, and in 1998, the actual work on the project started. The Fitaihi Company under the technical and medical leadership of Dr. Walid Fitaihi was the founder and first investor of the company, and later the company joined with the other medical team. I worked in IMC as a Supervisor under the department of Patient Services, who constantly communicate with the patients about their conditions. I made sure that the patients were provided with the necessary assistance and services. Part of my work was to perform an action referendum for the patients about their satisfaction with the different services provided by IMC. I was in-charge on receiving the complaints and observations in the area of responsibility of the respective departments, and I assisted on cases like resolving the issues that occurred anytime of the day and to end every issue that occurred in the specific area with the specific issue. I was in-charge to provide everything that the patients, visitors, and escorts would possibly need or I offered the detailed services as requested in the department especially to the elderly and with special needs. In addition, I made sure to follow up on the inpatients that made some requests or follow ups during their stay in the hospital. I really performed the utmost services in terms of proper communication with clarity of the issues and how it is resolved accordingly.
I adhere on the power of the organizational influences with my seniors, co-supervisors, and subordinates. The relationship in communication among the members of the organization regardless of position greatly influence every amount of innovation, work satisfaction, decision-making, and the individual or group perceptions in the environment of the workplace. The leadership and management communication were related to the individual trust and the overall trust of the company. I was assigned to gather feedbacks from the different clients randomly of ten participants of the survey to be conducted in different setting in the hospital and received positive and negative responses from them and the interview results are confidential by not exposing the identity of the clients involved. The survey I gathered was directly reported to my superior for a thorough evaluation. As per feedback, only two clients out of ten clients I interviewed who said that they received poor services in general. The department head commended on my interview-survey and immediately called an emergency meeting to inform the rest of the team about the result of the evaluation of IMC. During the meeting, the department head suggested for the recorded interview to have a more sophisticated result. However, as promised to the client before the survey was given, they confirmed and accepted the survey unless their identity is not revealed.
Generally, the negative feedback is about the slow response of some queries in actual situation, phone call, or online. Some said that were staffs in the hospital that lack care and attention when addressing the issue and sometimes end up with unresolved problems. Others complained the assigned staff of not courteously attending the patient, visitors, or clients concerns. However, majority of the interviewed clients agreed on the good services offered by IMC. They appreciated much the leadership of most of the team leaders and even the members when it comes to services necessary for the clients’ satisfaction and expectations. The department head considered my suggestion not to reveal the identity of the interviewees instead use the transcripts as a representation of the actual words without revealing the personal identities of the interviewees. I really admired the leadership of our overall head when he agreed on my suggestion. He listened to every detail of any suggestions good for the entire company and decided the best thing for the benefit of everyone. His leadership is an exception to be considered compared to other leaders I have known in the past employment I had.
One of my experiences working at IMC was a direct situation on one of my team members and happened to be a friend of mine and her name is Haneen. Haneen and I were schoolmates in college from one of the prestigious universities in the city and close friends. The fact that we were allowed to use social media sites such as facebook and twitter, most of the time she consumed much of her time on chatting and updating her status wall. As her supervisor, I disregard the friendship we had during college only during work when circumstances occur. However, I made sure that the disciplinary action will not affect our friendship. I dealt on the situation properly and officially sent her a memorandum of the violation she committed. I performed my duty as a leader to my team to demonstrate fairness and proper communication. The described style, traits, transformation, and proper approach led to mutual understanding and official reconciliation of the violation done. The scenario was not brought to the highest authority of the company because it was resolved accordingly at the lower department.
Application – Leadership at IMC
The experiences I had working in IMC helped me grow personally to adhere the importance of leadership and management communication. I believed that any discussion, misunderstanding, or decision-making within the organization will be resolved if every member cooperates and shares its skills and expertise especially on dealing with serious issues. Challenges are always present and normal with some internal contradictions. My experiences taught me a lot of ideas on how to apply and move to the next level of applying leadership as leaders are expected to perform the best or even risk the future just to motivate others for commitment of their assigned tasks. At present, I can say that I am capable of handling complex issues when it comes to team motivation and leadership.
Conclusion
Personally, I agree that effective leadership in the organization requires effective communication to the clients, colleagues, and superiors. Every team has its way on how to show their communication styles, leadership styles, and techniques. Despite some obstacles or issues that occur in the organization, still everyone can manage on the situation. Good leadership results good cooperation from its members. The importance of leadership and management communication is necessary and it should not be taken for granted. Effective communication skill is a very significant aspect to win and achieve the goals for the organization.
