Dear Mr. Callaway,
I am writing to you in order to attract the attention of people to the problem that exists in out society and that I find especially critical. It is the problem of suicides among youth. As you know, suicides are one of the major causes of death in the USA. Every year, about five thousand young people commit suicides, and this fact significantly affects not only members of their families but also American society in whole. Suicides negatively influence the mental condition of people and cause financial losses connected with medical expenses and lost productivity. I want people to understand that youth is more susceptible to public opinion and bullying than adults and, thus, require more tolerance and attention.
Through the columns of your paper, I would like to address the readers and to highlight the importance of proper education about suicides. Those of us who have never suffered from the consequences of suicide and have never experienced loss of children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and friends should thank their fate but understand that no one is impervious to this issue. I strongly believe that the spread of knowledge about suicides and their prevention among the modern youth is a key to the solution of the problem. I want to suggest adding educational courses regarding the origins of suicides and their prevention to school and university curricula. Furthermore, I want to highlight the importance of understanding the psychological reasons that could lead young people to suicides and the necessity to include them in the curricula.
I am absolutely sure that my suggestion is one of the best means of dealing with the problem of suicides. First, adding the educational programs about the suicide and its prevention is common and inclusive. It is not targeted only to young people with mental problems but to the whole youth. These programs provide understanding, and, as the result, can reduce manifestations of bullying and cyber-bullying. Students can learn how to be tolerant to each other and to realize price and significant of their lives. I strongly believe that it would have a positive impact on their vision of life and communication. Second, these programs can help to find out latent problems of some students and to overcome them in a good time. Indeed, the classes can be given only by professional psychologists that are able to recognize a liability to the commitment of the suicide. Hence, young people with problems or low self-esteem can get a proper professional help and save their priceless lives. Next, I want to note that such educational programs can help to overcome loneliness. Group studies can help to express misunderstandings and offenses and to make a student realize he or she is not the only person who has problems. Last, the programs can convince young people to request the needed assistance without references to special organizations. Too strong feelings and emotional stresses are not a disadvantage; they are benefits that make humans human. The one should not be ashamed of one’s emotions, problems, and character but should learn to cope with them.
I think that young people should realize that the society cares about them, and all the conflicts are caused just by misconceptions and misunderstandings. There is nothing more important than the human life. I strongly hope that my letter makes the readers share my viewpoint.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Sincerely yours,
