The purpose of this letter is to give more comprehensive details as to why consider Cardozo Law School to be an ideal fit and the reasons for why I would like to attend. I believe I bring two important qualities that will make me a successful lawyer. First, I consider myself a champion for the cause of the “wronged” or the “downtrodden.” I desire to use my legal skills and expertise to help better the condition of the “wronged,” who are essentially victims of unjust social constructions. Second, I bring to the table a passion for public interest law. I believe that people from disadvantaged communities often end up incarcerated because they lack financial backing and support. I seek to dedicate my career to helping those less fortunate and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of financial means, have access to important legal services.
What particularly draws me to Cardozo Law is its evident commitment to public interest law. There are so many opportunities for students to get involved in public interest law. The Center for Public Service Law provides students with a wide range of opportunities to gain experience in the public service sector. Cardozo Law also provides numerous clinics and externship opportunities at the law school for students to gain real world, practical experience in this field. Ranked by the National Jurist as the 24th best law school for practical training, Cardozo Law is a leader among law schools in furnishing students with ample practical legal training and experience. While classroom coursework is certainly important to building the foundation of a sound legal education, there is no better way to learn and develop skills than through clinics. Cardozo Law offers numerous clinics that better prepare students for the future legal profession. I would like to take advantage of the semester long and yearlong clinics to build my professional portfolio.
I was delighted to read of Professor Alex Reinert winning a settlement to eliminate solitary confinement of juveniles and others in New York prisons. I found Professor Reinert’s work very inspiring and this is the level of professional excellence I one day aspire to achieve. I would also be interested in participating in the new Center for Rights and Justice, which contains more than 25 programs dedicated to fighting for social justice and criminal justice reform. I am pleased to know that Cardozo Law offers a number of Public Service Summer Funding stipends for students who wish to partake in public service and public interest internships.
I would like to dedicate my future career vindicating both civil and constitutional rights. A unique opportunity available to Cardozo Law students that I would love to take full advantage of is participation in the Innocence Project and assisting in exonerating innocent persons. I have long been fascinated by the noble work of the Innocence Project. As I would like to devote my career to assisting the underprivileged members of society, I would also be interested in participating in the Criminal Defense Clinic. The Criminal Defense Clinic would expose me to a variety of criminal defense fieldwork and would greatly enhance my knowledge and understanding of criminal law. I would also be interested in the NY State Law Department Office of the Attorney General Field Clinic, as this field experience would expose me to a broad array of legal areas and would help develop my practical litigation skills.
I am also intrigued by the many pro bono and volunteer opportunities available for law students at Cardozo Law and I would take full advantage of such programs. In particular, I would be interested in participating in the Cardozo Advocates for Battered Women’s program because I would like the chance to help give victims of domestic violence a voice. Domestic violence is such a serious problem in society that often goes unnoticed and does not receive the attention it deserves. As many victims of domestic violence are often in a position, either due to socioeconomic status or an underprivileged upbringing, I would like to be and outspoken advocate for domestic violent victims.
I would also be highly interested in the Cardozo Youth Advocates Program because I would have opportunity to teach youths about the important role of law in their lives. As a strong advocate for children’s rights, I would also like to take advantage of the Youth Justice Clinic to assist at-risk youths and represent their interests. Like domestic violence victims, children are often forgotten and overlooked in the criminal justice system. Children need strong advocates to stand up for their rights, and the Youth Justice Clinic would enable me to be an outspoken proponent of children’s rights.
Cardozo Law School is a perfect place for me to acquire the knowledge I seek and also streamline my skills, achievements, and experiences towards the primary goal of contributing to public interest law. I want to be a student of a law school with an exceptional faculty that would help me to be an effective, knowledgeable, and charismatic supporter of the marginalized and forgotten. I know I would thrive in the Cardozo Law environment, and hope I am given the opportunity to participate in all that the law school has to offer.
