During the medieval periods, the code of Chivalry was in effect a moral system that defined qualities that were to be idealized by the knights. In essence, this moral system was more like an honor code of the knights; it technically exemplified their royal and exceptional stance in the society. Considering that chivalry required knights to behave in a way that epitomized good morals, I am of the opinion that; chivalry lack place in the contemporary society. Throughout the essay, arguments in favor of the notion above will be presented.
In Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, Chivalry is one of the predominant themes brought out by the author. In essence, the story delineates the code of ethics or rather the moral conduct that the round table knights ought to espouse. King Arthur endorses the need to sanction chivalry by asking the knights within the fellowship of the round table to renew their vows of the knighthood every year during the Pentecost. He emphasized that every knight ought to make a promise of protecting women and in any case run away from compromising situations that include treason and murder. Though the majority of the knights in this story adhere strongly to the promises they make, they break their promises at various occasions.
With the above said, it is clear that some knights could not adhere to the vows they made particularly the virtue of respect to humanity irrespective of the fact that they had vowed to uphold chivalry. The above clearly accentuates that chivalry made the knights pretend to be what they were not in principle. Considering that human beings have since undergone a series of civilization over the subsequent years, chivalry is now an outmoded system. In essence, chivalry forces people to act out of their will, based on this notion I believe that chivalry has no place in the modern society.
In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the two characters render a strong adherence to chivalry particularly the five virtues of the knights. For instance, the virtue of respect prevented Gawain from sleeping with the wife of his guest. Though the story exemplifies a strong adherence to chivalry by the knights involved, it is imperative to note that this story establishes the need to remain conscious of one’s weakness and mortality. The above is true owing the fact that Gawain had to abandon the codes of chivalry in order to seek physical comfort for survival while in the forest. The above establishes the fact that it is difficult to act in a way that that depict acute actions. Arguably, chivalry was in essence a system that concealed the true nature of the knights, considering that Gawain changed in the aftermath while in the forest. It is apparent that chivalry has no place in the contemporary society owing its aptitude to make people behave in a particular way that in the end will not define their true nature.
I presume that people in the modern society are civilized enough to act in a morally acceptable way without necessarily being forced into acting in an exemplified way in regards to a certain system. At some point, every knight deviated from the morals expected of them. It is, therefore, imperative to acknowledge the fact that chivalry has no place in the contemporary society subsequent to its illusory nature.
