There are around 4.3 million Mexican immigrants in the New York metropolitan area. Mexican community appears to be the most fast growing one. The Mexican population of the New York metropolitan area grew 6.5% annually from 2000 to 2010. According to statistics, approximately 80% of New York Mexicans were born outside the United States (As Mexican Community Grows, Local Leaders Eye Greater Political Prowess).
The level of unemployment among Mexicans in New York is the lowest comparing to other national communities, although most of them are enrolled in low paid jobs.
Mexican community is on the second place in the rate of employment in New York. Around 94% of Mexican labour force have job, this number is even higher for the male part – around 97%. Such a low level of joblessness is mostly driven by such factors as the fact that the major part of the Mexican immigrants are men and younger people.
The major part of Mexican immigrants are engaged with service occupations, natural resources, construction and maintenance occupations and production, transportation and material moving occupations. Cuisine is one of the most important source of income, many Mexicans tend to hold fast food tracks or small cafes. Only 13% and 10% are involved in sales and office occupations and management, business, science and arts occupations respectively (Mexican Immigrants in the United States).
The median earnings for all full-time year round Mexican workers in NYC is $20 800, comparing to $42 000 and $30 000 for all workers and all Latinos respectively (Treschan and Mehrotra).
The most important aspect of Mexican community's contribution to the New York City is an economic one. Mexicans represent a significant share of workforce, which at the same tom doesn't require high pays. As American labour market is open to enrichment, while the Mexican one is overstuffed, such a flow of workers is mutually beneficial. Mexicans also expand the consumer market, which contributes to economic growth of the whole US as well as New York in particular.
Another important aspect is that Mexican community enriches the city culturally. It facilitates the spread of Spanish language among the city's population , being a potent drive of cultural growth. It also contributes to the development of culture in all the other aspects, such as music, literature, architecture, cinematography etc.
In conclusion, the economic, political and social-cultural influence of current immigrants is extremely beneficial for the city.
