Life is one journey that causes the people living it to feel entrapped in different situations. It is then left upon the individuals to figure out ways out of this entrapment. To start with, the main actor is trapped. A famous photographer called Jeff is the main hero of the movie. He is trapped physically to a wheel chair. The cause of this is a broken leg that is accompanied by a heavy cast. The cast covers his body to the hip restricting his movements. Jeff cannot leave his apartment no matter how much he would like to. There are only two frequent visitors to his apartment. One is Lisa his fiancée. The other is Stella his nurse. His boredom and inactivity takes a toll on him. The main character finds a way out of this physical entrapment. He uses his camera to watch inside his neighbors houses through his window.
The villain in the movie is also a trapped man. The crime around which the movie revolves is murder. Thorwald is one of Jeff’s neighbors. He is trapped in a happy – less marriage. His wife is the nagging. She has been spending all her time spread on her bed pretty doing nothing much. Thorward is a salesman and the wife feels he has not met her expectations. And she lets him know it. The villain is desperate to escape from this entrapment. He kills his wife and buries her body. He intends to escape away with a woman who appreciates his efforts more.
Marriage is one of the most common entrapments that have been created by the society. Lisa the fiancé to Jeff is also trapped in their relationship. Lisa feels like Jeff does not want to commit to her. She is not happy that Jeff would rather focus his attention to their neighbors and not to her. She goes to extreme extents in her desire to gain his attention. She wears amazing clothes and enticing lingerie. She brings him food and wine during her visits. Jeff does not fall for these enticements and Lisa blames herself for it. When all these have failed to have an effect on Jeff, Lisa decides to use a different approach. She stops with her efforts to change him. She gradually begins to accept him as he is. In the process she believes him as far as his suspicions of murder are concerned.
Jeff on the other hand is weary of marriage. He is apprehensive of changing his lifestyle to accommodate his new status as a married man. He already is satisfied with his current bachelor life. He is more preoccupied on the disadvantages that his marriage would bring. He tells Lisa that he would like them to maintain the status quo. He avoids any and every situation that may lead to intimacy with Lisa and uses his investigations as a scapegoat. Jeff is also worried about his effectiveness. The acts that run to his hip worries. He is scared that it may have made him ineffective. To him marital life is tedious and droning. He prefers the excitement and the rush – blood of the murder case. Jeff feels that Lisa is not cut for this kind of lifestyle. This starts to change when Lisa decides to prove Jeff wrong. Lisa climbs though a window in search of evidence to connect the villain to the murder. This proves to work magic for their relationship. Jeff is more impressed in her and his concern for her grows. This serves to bring them closer and they are now likely to eventually get married.
Voyeurism is an important aspect of our societal behavior. Curiosity is an integral aspect of every human being. Voyeurism is one of the things that satisfy this curiosity. It is also used as a means of seeking a way out of personal problems. People are able to see traces of them when they watch other people. Stella who is a nurse to the main actor Jeff had this to say on voyeurism. She stated that it is very much easier to look and study other people that to look and study one self. She advices Jeff to stop with the “peeping tom” and take a long hard look on himself instead. Jeff results to voyeurism as an escape route from his boredom. It provides him with a feeling similar to the one he has in the field taking pictures. He is also able to evade having debates on marriage with his betrothed by acting busy and preoccupied. He perceives the connubial of a neighbor tip to homicide and this enlightens his opinions on marriage.
As the movie progresses, we the audience are sucked in the voyeurism. We are able to observe different people going on with their lives secretly. This in a way satisfies some parts deep in use. Stella begins the movie with a statement that “we are a race of peeping toms”. A critical analysis of this will lead to the same conclusion. It is that desire to watch others that makes us flock into movie and play theaters. The results of this may be positive for example entertainment and development of the industry. However, this does not change the fact that it is voyeurism. Jeff and his fiancé were able to uncover a murder and expose the murderer which is a very good thing. It was still voyeurism. Jeff unbelievably manages to edge closer to his marriage with Lisa and also have his other leg broken.
