The natural selection is regarded as the principle central to the theory of evolution. It can be defined as the process in which the species adapt to the environment in order to survive. In addition, natural selection leads to evolution when certain species with greater survival probability reproduce and pass on their genetic characteristics to the next generation of species. This grand theory of evolution is simple yet greatly misunderstood. In order to get a bigger picture of what theory is all about, imagine specie of beetles that comes in red and brown. Both of the beetle variety exists in the same environment. However, due to the bright color of the red beetle, it makes them more visible to other animals that prey on insects. In this case, the red beetles gets eaten more often than the brown variety, which makes it more difficult for them reproduce.
As the red beetles struggle to survive in its environment, the brown beetles remained dominant in number and its offspring inherited the same color as its parents. The brown beetles are less visible to other animals that prey on them due to the brown coloration that blends with the tree bark. The same survival mechanism is likely to be inherited by the young brown beetles, which ensures the continuous reproduction and continuation of the specie. On the other hand, the red beetled continued to dwindle in number and its survival rate is becoming slimmer. In time, the red beetles will become extinct and the brown beetles will persist because the offspring have inherited the genetic traits that secured the survival of its parents, which is the brown coloration.
