Obedience is a very importance concept in psychology. It refers to an act of a submissive behavior. Every society requires people to be obedient to the senior people including their elder siblings, parents, teachers and other people who demand respect from them. The concept of obedience should be promoted because it is necessary for a peaceful coexistence in schools or at home. However, it should not only be practiced by the children, but everyone. Further more, it should be a life long trait which should not be stopped even at an older age.
As a student of psychology, I would like to say that obedience should be taught to children while they are still young. According to Jean Piaget, the process of development of human behavior takes place progressively. Since children learn as they grow, they should be introduced to acceptable codes of conducts while still young. This is important because they row to know that those are the standard codes of behavior accepted by the society. Otherwise, if they are not introduced to these behaviors, they will not be able to conform to the accepted standards. This is a very unfortunate negligence which will adversely affect them as they grow up.
For people to conform to the accepted ethical values of their societies, they must be ready to practice what they are taught. However, children tend to practice to what is taught to them by their parents. The parents, on the other hand, should act responsibly. They should take their time to teach their children the right behaviors they want them to portray as they grow up. One of the ways through which such a success can be realized is through the use of reinforcements. Whenever a child conforms to the accepted values, they should be appropriately rewarded. This will be appositive reinforcement which will promote the reoccurrence of such behaviors. Otherwise, if they deviate from the norm, they should be punished. In this case, a punishment will act as a negative reinforcement which helps in minimizing or eradicating the possible recurrence of the same behavior.
The use of reinforcements is a very good concept because it helps in determining the behavior of a child. When I was in elementary and high school, my teachers used to reward and punish us for our actions. One fact about human beings is that they learn from their experiences. Once a child is exposed to a stimulus, they develop schemata. These schemata are later relied upon to help in future development of the behavior because they help in interpreting such like stimuli. Therefore, I would like to argue in favor of introducing children to strict discipline while they are still young. Immediately they learn to associate a certain conduct with punishment, they will shy away from it. This is because they know it will result into a painful punishment. However, positive behaviors can be promoted if they are made to associate it to reward. In such a situation, a child will learn to be obedient since they perceive it as an accepted conduct which is required in the society.
With this in mind, I would like to point out that obedience is a very important thing which should be rewarded. In a school set up, the teachers should actively play their roles as disciplinarians. They should be ready to introduce strict discipline on their learners because they heavily rely on them as the chief source of authority, whose words are not only final, but must be complied to. They should ensure that the students conform to the accepted modes of conduct which are ethical and moral in the eyes of the entire society. At no one time should they relent on this matter since it is of a great contribution to the lives of these learners.
During the teaching and learning processes, the teacher should be ready to use rewards and punishments appropriately. At the same time, they should formulate rules and regulations to be adhered to by all the learners. Although they should not be scarier, they must know that it is their responsibility to introduce their learners into ethical and obedient characters. Thus, whenever any student fails to comply with the set regulations, they should be punished. However, the teacher is free to use a wide range of acceptable punishments ranging from natural to corporal punishments depending on the severity of the conduct. After all, they are only meant to tame their conducts and make them conform to the accepted standards. If they fail to discharge this role, the learners will adopt unacceptable behaviors which will not only compromise classroom stability, but also interfere with their interpersonal relations. My teachers used this strategy to tame our conducts.
In conclusion, I would like to say that obedience is paramount in the life of everyone. It is the pillar of harmony and cohesion in the society. As a student, I would like to emphasize that it is necessary for the success of every learner. Without it, it will be impossible to conform to the accepted codes of conduct. Hence, I appeal to everyone to contribute to the establishment of an obedient society jut the way my teachers have been doing.
