Microbiology helps us understand microbes and how they interact with humans, plants animals as well as the environment. Microbiology is an important part of who I am. My years as a Masters’ student in the Biology department at the Laurentian University has cemented my love for microbiology and grounded my feet in research. This is what I wish to continue doing in future by making biomolecular science my mainstay. To be the best in biomolecular science research, it is imperative that my choice institution for my PhD studies be at the forefront in this field of research. Based on what I have observed during my masters, Laurentian University is the best fit for me. In addition, to the advantages accorded to me by this course and in this institution, I will get the opportunity to further my master’s research project which comprises of the identification of metalloprotease secreted from culture supernatent of M. bovis BCG.
My objective is to further my education and attain a high position in Microbiology research preferably in a health research center. My rich background in microbiology places me in good stead to achieve this goal. Having excelled in my academics thus far, I wish to remain unrelenting in my pursuit of excellence in this field. During my undergraduate studies in Microbiology, I maintained a GPA of 3.22/4 and have maintained a GPA of 84/100 in my master’s studies. I believe that I can maintain this kind of performance in my PhD studies in biomolecular science. This is because I have the zeal required to perform at a high level. During the course of my studies, I have acquired several skills through a hands-on approach. These include research and hospital work, organizational and leadership skills as well as good time management. I believe that these are crucial components of the dedicated researcher.
I have attained various experiences and certifications in different positions which underpin my educational background in microbiology. These include a WHMIS Training Course and Certificate of Lab Safety; Certificate of completion of training in the Microbiology Department in a Maternity and Child Hospital; the Makkah 4th Annual Al Noor Specialist Hospital Laboratory and Blood Bank certificate of attendance; certificate of completion of the Identifical Program for Infection Control Department; certificate of English for Academic Purposes Program and a TOEFL IBT score of 92 out of 120. These certifications and experiences underline the fact that I am willing to go the extra mile to amass relevant information in microbiology. The exposure I have in different capacities provides me with a clear picture on what is expected of researchers.
I hope to further the research I began in my master’s degree. My research project was on the identification of secreted metalloprotease from the culture supernatent of M.bovis BCG. I employed SDS gel electrophoresis for the separation of macro-elements as well as mass spectrometry and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis in the process of identification. I hope that my doctorate degree will provide me with a greater scope of things that is required in a research of this magnitude. I understand the potential that research in biomolecular science has in solving global problems. For example, the kinds of research I hope to encounter in these studies include inquiries into mycobacteria and their preventive effects and workings of their supernatants against asthma progression. The study of immunity development through recombinant microbacterium BCG is also a major subject I hope to encounter in my PhD studies.
I am particularly interested in this program and this institution because of its intensive nature. In addition, I am keen about the areas of function, structure and molecular properties relevant to biological processes in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and the use of these molecules in biotechnology and medicine as well as other applied biosciences. The program provides doctoral students with research and academic training that has produced exceptional students for academic research and biotechnology careers by using the most recent in methodologies while creating a conducive environment for the development of new skills and knowledge in the field. This program provides a hands-on approach which equips students with relevant skills.
My unrelenting desire to learn new things together with my qualities of diligence and attention to detail will assist me to develop the requisite research skills in biomolecular science. I believe that this course will impact my professional future accordingly. The rich cultural context offered by Laurentian University is one that prepares the individual to work and fit seamlessly in different parts of the world. The highly professional climate afforded by the University positively impacts on the leadership qualities of the students. I believe that this would equip me with the ability to lead multicultural professionals in a busy research environment, as is my dream. I look forward to a fruitful learning process that will equip me with the tools to meet the challenges that a career in biomolecular science research demands.
