Ladies and gentlemen, in the words of Martin Luther King, “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.’’ In these wise words, Martin Luther appreciated the value of compassion; but he knew something more needed to be done. Settling veterans are an infallible sign of appreciation for the sacrifices that veterans make for the sake of the country. Today, San Diego is the sixth most populous domicile for homeless veterans. And, according to the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, the number of homeless persons under the age of 25 living in San Diego increased from 625 in 2015 to 830 in 2016. These figures indicate a 32% increase in the number of homeless persons in San Diego, a majority of them being war veterans. On the contrary, the State Department of Veteran Affairs ranks the figure higher to about 227,000 homeless persons in San Diego. As Democrats, we will blow the trumpets and let the world know that even a single life of a veteran matters. It is a great dishonor for men in uniform, who once put their lives on the line to suffer and live in deplorable conditions in their motherland after serving to protect Americans citizens and their properties against external aggressors especially Islamic Jihadists.
Ladies and Gentlemen, for far too long, the leadership of this country has remained silent on this matter; however, my resolve and that of many other Democrats is to ensure that the government houses veterans and gives them the deserved honor. Together with the women veterans’ initiative, we will draft a bill and present it in the House of Representatives to ensure that a law is enacted for the resettlement of all veterans not just in San Diego but also in Los Angeles and other parts of the country. It is my strongest belief that both Democrats and Republicans shall join hands on this matter to ensure that we bring it to closure.
I would like to conclude by acknowledging the efforts that President Obama put in place in fighting terrorism, expecting that President Trump will do much more. However, the trappings of war bring with it fatalities and destruction. Some of these fatalities are evident in our eyes when one sees the number of homeless veterans in San Diego. While it is imperative to fight terror and protect our motherland, it should not be lost to us that we need to care for those that return after gruesome experiences with the enemy. Our values as Americans and the bill of rights expect us to do much better, and therefore, I call upon all Americans to rally behind us to settle and house all veterans from the streets.
