Doritos ‘Goat 4 Sale’ advert is powerful commercial that uses humor to attract viewers’ attention and curiosity while promoting Doritos chips as the most delicious and addictive. The goat is seen, screaming, kicking things and jumping on the table because there was no Doritos chips left in the cabinet. These funny events can easily be recalled by the viewer because they are distinctive and unusual.
The Doritos intended to promote their chips as the most delicious and addictive. The main characters in the commercial are seen eating the chips. The goat is captured eating chips stored in the cabinet while its owner is a sleep. The owner of the goat is also seen eating chips in one of the rooms before he is caught up by the goat that is craving for chips. The goat and its owner enjoy eating the chips throughout the advert. This gives an impression that the chips are very tasteful. The fact that Doritos chips are captured in all the scenes makes the product stand out.
The advert ‘Cowboys Herding Cats’ employs the use of metaphor to market Electronic Data Systems services. The interesting scenes in the commercial are meant to keep viewers attention focused on the screen as the advert rolls down. Cats are not known to be herded by cowboys. Consequently, the use of novel event was good for memory retention.
The advert does not feature any specific product or service provided by EDS. It was intended to market the company as creative IT solutions provider. EDS, a subsidiary of Hewlett Packard Corporation provides IT services to businesses located in various countries in the world. The commercial was aimed at portraying the company as a top global leader in IT consultancy services. However, the advert is not very effective because it requires interpretation of herding cat concept. Although, the advert ends by explaining what the company does, some scenes and events captured are subject to different interpretations.
Although, it may be difficult for a viewer to interpret the metaphor of cowboys herding cats, the advert to a greater extent reflect the nature of the company operations. The company provides technological solutions to business problems. Just like herding cats also require great skills, crafting E-business solutions demand creativity, new ideas, technology, research and innovation. The cowboys use every skill and resource to ensure that the take the cats to their intended destination. EDS also assures clients that they shall use technology, ideas and information to achieved clients’ goals.
This advert was made to create a lasting impression about the company and its services. The scenes in the adverts are captivating. Viewers can see cats swimming across the river and cowboys trying to rescue cats from trees. These are imaginary and strange events that evoke a lot of thinking in the mind.
I knew about ‘Cowboy Herding Cats’ advert in 2010 from the internet. It was among the Super Bowls highly rated adverts. I developed interest in watching Super Bowl Sundays in 2010. I would watch the adverts uploaded on ‘You Tube’ and read about their ratings and review. Since, I watched it three years ago; I can recall some of its impressive scenes. However, it is worth noting that the advert was manipulated heavily by the computer. Consequently, it was too imaginative and unrealistic. EDS should minimize the use of computer to generate artificial scenes it its adverts.
The Super Bowl adverts that I can vividly remember is the Budweiser’s ‘Puppy Love.’ I can easily recall this advert because of strange friendship between puppy and horse that was captured in the advert.
The ‘Puppy Love’ advert elicits strong emotions and attachment. Budweiser uses allegory and story to promote its lager beer. Although, the brand is mentioned at the end of the advert, viewers can connect the scenes and the events in the adverts with the intentions of the company. The puppy and horse are great friends in the advert. Puppy sneaks from animal adoption center to meet the horse. The attempt to separate the two failed and the two were reunited again.
The advert does not achieve much in making the product stand out because the product is only identified at the end of the commercial. However, it effectively links the marketing objectives of the company with the product. The company intended to promote the beer as a product with strong brand loyalty.
The advert portrayal of Budweiser larger as a loyal brand is partly accurate. Budweiser control significant amount of the beer market in US. This success is partly attributed to the popularity and the loyalty of the company’s brands.
