What is the most effective nursing care delivery model and why?
The total patient care model is considered as an ideal and effective way in managing patients. It is one of the oldest and effective models in the nursing system that provides all-round care to the patients. One of the major reasons to opt for the total patient care model is that is involves comprehensive patient care services such as planning, organization, and performance of all care activities of the patient. The total patient care includes 24-hour nurse assistance, wherein nurses work in shifts of 8 hours to provide healthcare services to the patient. In this model, the patient receives the best of healthcare services, 24 hours a day, and is exclusively based for the patient (American Nurses Association 2015).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of your chosen nursing care delivery model?
One of the key advantages of the total patience care model is the comprehensive and 24-hours service provided to the patient. The model also includes personal hygiene, medications, treatments, emotional support, and education required for the patient as and when needed. The total patient care model is no mores less than a luxury 5-star hotel treatment, where in the patient is at the epitome of receiving round-the-clock services. The rate of mishaps, disputes, or patient dissatisfaction is rare within this type of delivery models. However, a key disadvantage to the model is that the inclusion of 3 different nurses to provide 24-hour service. There could be communication and co-ordination errors between the shift nurses which may lead to medication errors, misinterpretation of reports, and patient support (Dearholt & Dang, 2012). A classic example of the total patient care model is the care provided to a patient in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. In this case, the patient receives 24-hour monitoring services combined with comprehensive care such as personal hygiene, emotional support, education, training, medical treatment, and 24-hour nurse assisted services. Nurses play a key role in the care and management of such patients which relate to improved outcomes (Hughes 2008).
