The world is experiencing a new dawn of the Internet of things (IoT). The IoT can also be referred to as Internet of objects because it deals with the combination of different components. The objects are interconnected in a manner to have ubiquitous intelligence. The ubiquity of the Internet increases every day because the integration of objects increases as well, which eventually leads to a distribution of objects that assist human beings in communication. It also communicates with other devices to send back a viable feedback that assists people in particular duties that are undertaken daily. The IoT is currently opening large opportunities of application for the technology, which guarantees improved lives. The aim of the paper is to explore the Internet of things technology and examine how it assists in data communication.
Despite the Internet of things gaining popularity and attracting the attention of every trending topic in most scientific journals, including the European Union conferences, many people do not understand what it entails (Ashton 100). Today, many people depend on the Internet to obtain information, and therefore, they use the Internet for almost every activity. It is the component, which is widely used in the world for relaying and sending information. It is true that human beings feed around 50 petabytes of the information found on the Internet by use of input devices like a keyboard for typing, taking photos, and recording among other activities.
In the definition of the Internet of things , especially by use of conventional diagrams, routers and servers are given priority. However, the most important routers of the Internet is usually the “people.” The reason why it is referred to as Internet of things is that it is physical. Our society and economy are not based on the information. For instance, you cannot feed on bits, but it is based on things. It is true that ideas and information are important; however, things matter more in this case. Critics of the Internet of things argue that computers and the information technology rely on the information fed by human beings, meaning that they know more about ideas than things (Ashton 110).
Despite these criticisms, computers, and the Internet are important today. Through them, we communicate and share information simply through data communications. Much of the information is shared remotely, in that people do not have to meet to share it face to face. It occurs over long distances. The most common form of data communication is telecommunication. It includes components like telephony, television ad telegraphy among others, which have the capability to help communicate at a distance. Data refers to information that is exhibited in any form, either electronic or written. Therefore, we can conclude that data communication involves sending and receiving of information between two devices with communication devices.
Data communication takes place when the communicating devices are far, and there is the need for a combination of software and the hardware (Forouzan 10). The software is the program while hardware is physical components. For most of these components to function, there must be the internet. There are different fundamental characteristics that data communication must possess for its effectiveness.
The first component is delivery. The system should be able to deliver the information to the desired destination. The ends user or the device where the information is intended should receive the right information. To add on delivery, the intended device should only receive the information. The other thing is accuracy. The information sent should be received accurately. During the transmission of data through devices, it is altered in different forms. Mostly, the data is transformed into waves before it reaches the end device. Altering data and leaving it uncorrected will make the data unusable. Thirdly, time is an important factor considered in any data communication system. The information or the data should be delivered promptly. When the data is delivered late, it becomes useless.
For instance, during the delivery of audio or video, they should be delivered on time. There should be no delays to achieve real-time transmission. Lastly, the final factor that should be maintained in data communication is Jitter. It means uneven delivery of data and is common with audio and video packets. The uneven delivery results to the poor quality of the video, and it may not relay the intended message. These factors can be enhanced by effective components of the communication system (Madisetti and Bahga 14).
There are five components of data communication. The message is the first component. This is the data communicated or the information. There are different forms of data that include audio, texts video, pictures, and numbers. The sender is the other component, and it is the device that sends the information. It can either be a video camera, telephone, a computer, or workstation and so on. Transmission is the other vital component of data communication. It is the path followed by the data or the message from the sender to the receiver (Madisetti and Bahga 23). Lastly, there is a protocol that is the rules that govern the transmission of the data from sender to the receiver. Without these rules, there will be no communication. The receiving device will not understand the message of the sending device.
The Internet of things is important in the data communication. The Internet is the richest platform for obtaining information, and it facilitates the sending and receiving of information. For example, an email is sent through Internet network and received over the Internet network. Therefore, there is a relationship between data communication and Internet technology. There are many concepts that exist between the two. Network concept is the main, and it means a collection of computers that can communicate with one another over the transmission lines.
There are different examples of computer networks. The most obvious is local area network (LAN). It connects the computers in a small and one geographic location, such as in a small organization located in a single location. It is the most common networks used in the offices with many computers. Connection over a wide area is called wide area network (WANs). It refers to the connection of computers located over large and different geographic locations. In some instances, it can be a connection of two or more LAN networks. Finally, we have the largest network in-universe that connects all the computers in the world.
The Internet has varied uses. However, communication is the most common and popular use of the Internet (Gibson 24). Email tops in the list as the most common type of communication used. It can be used to form email discussion groups, the formation of chat groups and even as IRC. Many of the computers are the Internet enabled, therefore, it is possible to communicate over the internet. Other methods of communication over the incorporate Internet video conferencing and audio conferencing. Internet telephony is also available on the internet.
The common message of data communication used on the Internet occurs as texts. Text can be letters or punctuations. Effective communication requires that one takes the time to prepare unless it is informal communication. The message should have the correct grammar, spellings and well punctuated to have a relevant meaning with the exception of informal communication. Online communication is risky due to cyberspace crime. Therefore, it is advisable when communicating over the Internet not to reveal personal information (Agrawal and Zeng 21).
Respect should mutually exist when communicating. It is because the manner in which the communication is done makes it hard to monitor the people since you cannot see or you may never meet the person on the other device. There is a certain measure that should be taken into consideration when communicating over the internet. Privacy should be maintained. For instance, when sending a message, it should be encrypted or coded although some laws prohibit the action. The other point of concern is abusive communication. Laws apply to harassment and libel over the internet, which can also be referred to as Internet bullying. The communication should not cause annoyance to the other party.
In conclusion, Internet of thing is growing due to advancement technology and daily improvement. It is important and applicable in different fields, especially in data communication. People can easily communicate from anywhere in the world through data communication and the internet. However, there is still need for more technology on the computers to convert the Internet of things from the ideas to things. Such move would make the computers independent of the human effort in feeding them with information.
