Good Example Of Roger Zare: Geometries Essay

The composer I have chosen to write this paper on is American Roger Zare. Roger is a composer from Florida who started composing at the age of 14. He learned multiple instruments at a young age including the piano and the violin. Roger has written solo, chamber, choral and full orchestra works. He has earned numerous honors including being the winner of the 5th annual Trio Anima Mundi Composition Prize. The work I chose to listen to is “Geometries” written in 2010 by Zare. The instruments that are included in the production of this are the clarinet, violin, cello and piano. It was commissioned by Nathan Cole and the UBS Chamber Music Festival of Lexington and performed in 2010.
Listening to the work you can hear a wonderful mix of all the instruments, and it is incredible to hear that all the sound that is heard is solely heard from four instruments. Zare is known for taking some of his inspiration for writing music from different fields and that includes mathematics. Listening to the piece, one of which is of pure beauty, it is obvious that this could be heard. The way the sounds piece together and the harmony of the four instruments really allows for a calm but interesting and invigorating listening experience. You can hear the difference between the two parts of the song as well as they make a change about halfway through the video, and this is purposeful. Reading the description written by Zare shows that he wanted to represent two different forms of geometry while allowing the instruments to play the sound of what he believed these instruments would sound like if they were to portray those aspects of geometry.
