The nature of modern medical services requires nursing leadership professionals who can establish and maintain an efficient atmosphere for the health care delivery. The position of a nurse administrator has a managerial function within a medical setting.
Working on a nursing leadership post requires a strong educational background. The most widely accepted way to become a nursing administrator is a Master of Science in Nursing or a Master of Health Administration with an emphasis on leadership, management or administration (Graduatenursingedu.org, 2016). Moreover, the unique qualification that is inherent for the nurse administrators is that they can mix business and leadership skills with their health care competence.
It is interesting to speculate on roles of the nursing administrator. The main function is to ensure patients’ well-being. Thus, that responsibility is composed of providing the highest level of health care from nurses (Study.com, 2016). Then, the administrator of a nursing care facility is responsible for representing and supervising the staff which includes recruiting new workforce, monitoring the documentation and being a mentor for the personnel. Besides, a nursing administrator is also in charge of budgeting and business decision making (Allnursingschools.com, 2016). He/she executes the active budget for the department and its efficient partition according to the department’s needs. One of the functions is widely used within the health care agencies is policy making (Work - Chron.com, 2016). The key point of that is to create, implement and assess the organization’s policies. In this way, a nursing administrator is expected to evaluate the potency of the existing policies and to create ones which will be more effective for the patients.
Finally, nursing administration is a sector that requires professionals who are knowledgeable of nursing practices and leadership skill. Such combination of qualifications should be based on the strong educational background and working experience.
