Introduction
Gender is the general makeup of the male and female. A male is masculine in nature, and with the physic and attitude he is central believed to perform duties, which a feminine body figure cannot, and vice versa. While marriage is traditionally defined as coming together of the opposite sex persons with an intention of forming a family, the two are intertwined such that the either sex depending on the society expectation as the role to play.
Down from and during early human life, Men and women assigned different roles that mutually help and foster wellbeing of society. Many societies of the world has defined gender roles distinctively, each member of the society has distinct roles to play. However, with modernity, some roles taken by both genders while some proves uphill task to either femininity or masculinity. Throughout the human history, roles are stipulated by the society, by household have altered dynamics within the society. Gender roles have changed over time and differ in many societies. This paper will display two societies in order to give the distinction between Egalitarian marriage in US and traditional marriage in Kenyan sub group Masaai. Marriage can be categorized into two types: traditional homemaker/breadwinner type and egalitarian type.
Traditional Marriages
Majority of the Masaai community still practice traditional type of marriage despite adopting modernity. Looking at the economic activities, the Masaai practices nomadic pastoralism and usual move from place to place in looking for pasture and water. Because of the social economic activities, young married Masaai men can spend almost a year herding their cattle before returning home. This means that married men spend less time with their families and thus the family ties are not as strong as they exist in the egalitarian families. . The Masaai society expects their women to take care of the children, heifers and the sheep. They are also expected to perform household chores.
Women are expected to be fully submissive to their husbands and are not to question their men misconduct. These women plays important roles in the homestead amongst them are cooking, building huts, looking after the children, preparing skins and hides, milking cows, feeding of weak and young livestock’s, fetching firewood, fetching water, attending table banking in order to supplement household income and enable them pay school fees.
Egalitarian marriages
In an egalitarian type of marriage, the male and female are equal in doing household work and caring of children is done equally. During before the political conflict, the view of separate domains arose, a very traditional chic of families. During modernization industrial insurgency, family structure was not at all longer a solitary element working unison in an agricultural community for endurance, in its place the nobleman left to work, and the females remained household to take watchfulness of the children. The thoughts that the female’s domicile was in the family, and the adoration of an actual customary part for the woman, arose in this period. Women folk were notable individual, pure and submissive while the man’s character was an aggressive, grasping, good one. Egalitarian believe equal participation among the couples; gender continues to play a central role in organizing the division of household chores. Women continue to do more of household chores than men and the differences are not explicable by a range of economic consideration. Based on the importance of gender, labor organization in the household is easily described while intimacy and the heterosexual attraction and compliments between the sexes. Household chore like preparing meals, cleaning house, ironing clothes laundering washing dishes and shopping are largely attended by wives as compared to the husband while duties like.
