Introduction
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a famous comedy movie released in 1975. The movie depicted the quest of King Arthur and his companions for the quest of searching the Holy Grail. The entire movie lies in the genre of satire in which parody of king Arthur has been shown (YouTube 1). However, the scene that is selected for this paper displays black knight fight with King Arthur. This scene best depicts the parody of King Arthur and his peasants making it the most hilarious scene of the movie. The scene is meant to communicate the acts of bravery of King Arthur as he was not afraid of any person or specie. The objective is to show how the king fought during his quest and what uncertain situations he encountered.
In the movie king, Arthur and his companion Patsy were traveling through a forest when he saw the two knights (black and green) fighting with each other. The king saw that the black knight defeated the green knight and offered him to join Arthur’s court at the Round Table. Black knight was the guard of the bridge that the king Arthur had to cross to continue his journey. King Arthur then requested the black knight to take a side and let him and his peasant pass the bridge. But the stubborn knight refused his request and challenged the king to have a fight with him. In the scene, the king Arthur and his fight was filmed with a great sense of humor which made the scene hilarious. The way King Arthur and the black knight fought with each other was very funny, and the dialogs between the both characters were amusing and interesting. The most interesting part was the black knight’s threats that he was giving to the king. Although he had lost all his limbs during the fight but he kept on showing off his useless bravery via dialogs.
After the king Arthur had cut off the left hand of the black knight, he called the king back in a fight by saying Tis but a scratch. Arthur made him realize that he has lost his one hand, but the knight said he had had worse than this. Again the king approached the knight and cut off his right arm; surprisingly the knight called him again for a fight. King Arthur appreciated the courage of a knight and told him that he has got the victory. However, the stupid knight kept on calling the king again and again by saying humorous lines and slangs until the king cutoff all his limbs and left him in the jungle. The scene met its point of entertaining the viewers and making the parody of the king and the black knight.
The scene depicted the parody of King Arthur, the great king whose conquests and bravery are well known. The humor was created in the scene to relate the quests of the king and the issues he had encountered during his quests. It was the cultural piece of art showing the parody of the great King of Britain. The black knight was a fiction character created to show that the king was capable to fight any creature.
Conclusion
The scene was very effective in showing the cowardice of the black knight and the renowned bravery of the king Arthur. The scene was showing the parody of the king Arthur therefore it is declared as the satire. The purpose of the scene was to put comedy in the fight and depict the bravery of King Arthur by imitating his actions. In the end the king chopped off all the limbs of the black knight leaving him unattended and helpless. The entire movie and particularly this scene showed the parody of the king Arthur and his bravery acts successfully by mesmerizing and influencing its viewers.
