Scavenger Hunt Part 2
1. Affirmative Action perpetuates racism (MC1). While affirmative action may enable more opportunities for education and employment, it encourages the false notion of the superiority of the white race and the degradation of the black race (Higginbotham 218) (MC2). In fact, research has demonstrated that the individuals, who benefit from the consequences of the practice of Affirmative action, are also victims of discrimination (Mayer 5). They are perceived as less likable individuals and competitors for the company and school resources. Such an adverse reaction also promoted racism in the community.
Affirmative action is highly misunderstood, which leads to racism, as Mayer states “ A lot of people assume its bout hiring people less qualified because they are a member of a protected group, even though that’s illegal” (Mayer 9) (MC3). Therefore it can be stated that the individuals who receive benefits of the affirmative actions are not welcomed in the society of the their peers and colleagues as others feel that their rights and intelligence might have been undermined simply on basis of the fact that the other individual of a diverse ethnic origin or belongs to a minority group or race.
2. Condoms should be distributed in public schools as a way to prevent teenage pregnancy (MC1). The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee declared in its policy statement in 2013 that condoms should be distributed in the schools, as an accompaniment to the sex education programs (MC2). Dr. Rebecca O’ Brien, who specializes in adolescent medicine as the Boston Children’s Hospital stated, “For teens to use them, they have to have them available, and they are not going to come in necessarily asking for them” (Pittman 17). (MC3) It is believed that the consistent and correct use of condoms be encouraged in the schools, as it will prevent pregnancy as well as other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) (Pittman 13). Use of condoms along with another birth control method is the best way to prevent pregnancy among youngsters (Pittman 13). The use of condoms will prevent teen pregnancy as it gives students the necessary protection, as well as prevents any long lasting and potentially social and physical damage or accidents. In addition to encouraging the prevention of pregnancy, the use of condoms can also be rightly promoted by emphasizing on the dangers of Sexually Transferable Diseases (STDs), and enlightening students on the ways in which they can prevent the both the undesirable outcomes.
3. The legal driving age should be raised to eighteen-years-old (MC1). If compared to the drivers who are 25 to 29 years of age, it can be observed that the teen drivers have four times the death rate as opposed to their age seniors (Weaver 3) (MC2). As is stated by the Foundation for Traffic Safety, 15- 17-year-olds were responsible for the most fatalities from car crashes between the years of 1995 and 2004 (Weaver 4) (MC3). Since 18 years is regarded as the age where an individual becomes a legal adult and has rights to owning arms, marriage, alcohol and other properties. Therefore the legal age for unsupervised driving in the United States of America should also be extended to 18 years (Weaver 3). Teenagers have a high mortality rate regarding driving accidents because of the fact that they have a lack of driving experience and have belief in their immortality (Weaver 3). Dr. Shaun Helman stated with regard to raising the legal age of driving, “evidence shows both youth and inexperience are factors in determining crash risk” (Millward 10). Since 16 and 17-year-old children are more or less fueled by hormones and rash decisions; therefore, leaving them in charge of their life, as well as the lives of others is highly risky. In fact, the results have been observed in the American society fairly obviously, as numerous accidents are caused by overly confident or confused and mislead teenagers. Allowing students to practice for one or two more years before they are allowed to drive unsupervised at the age of 18 years old is a highly suggested notions. It would not only increase the practice and control of the students in terms of driving skills but also ensure that they become more responsible and rational in terms of driving decisions.
