The story was an interesting read. However, it left me feeling pity for Leroy over his unreciprocated love. He appears helpless and desperate which made me empathize with his situation.
Jean’s attitude towards Leroy is unappreciative. She does not feel for Leroy’s condition and in her push for him to get a job, she does not do it kindly, and appears to belittle him because of his lack of a job. Leroy on the other hand is loving towards his wife and would wish them to start life over again. He lives ongoing for his life to share the same feelings.
Shiloh is representative of the conflict that is ongoing the couple’s life. Just like the civil war, the couple is experiencing conflict, which can be won just like the war.
The tractor trailer symbolizes problems that exist in the marriage. Just like it caused Leroy the loss of a job, the problems cause the loss of his marriage. The log cabin symbolizes the situation in the marriage. It is as empty as the marriage and its success only remains Leroy’s dream which is not shared by his wife; just like their marriage.
The visit is ironic because while their parents visited the place for their honeymoon, which is a beginning, they visit the place to break up.
A major social issue presented here is the changing face of socialization where modern entertainment comes in the way of real conversation.
One major social value is the position of the man as the head of the house and provider- role of gender.
The fist is reflective of the current since times media often takes up people’s time. The gender roles is however a departure from today’s society where both men and women share responsibility.
Leroy should have stopped his obsession with the cabin and talked to his wife more and tried to get a job that he could do.
This would have saved his marriage by paying attention to Jean and communicating which opens doors for understanding.
