Every student has his/her own priorities and responsibilities. Each college student faces the dilemma of choosing whether to reside on campus or off campus. When a college student is required to make this decision, parents are once again reminded of their independence. This judgment is to be taken by the student and the parents together. Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages. It depends on each student’s personal preference of what he/she chooses. This comparison will help point out a few important aspects of each decision.
The most primary reason given by parents and students who want to reside off campus is that it saves money. Cost is the single most important issue in this debate. It is cheaper to share a rented apartment with students near the college campus than to live on campus. However, students forget to realize that living in a rented apartment may seem cheap; it has many hidden costs. There is an added cost of food, furniture, appliances, transportation, cleaning and laundry, internet, and the advance rent payment.
Another reason for students and parents to choose to live off campus is to privacy. Living off campus without the hustle and bustle of a dorm keeps the student focused on studies. However, by living on campus, the classes are in proximity and the student is socially connected with most of his fellow classmates. He/she does not need to try hard to stay in social circles.
Both options are proven successful. It depends on the student’s priorities. This is another life experience that all college students face and this decision-making process helps them think deeper about their life and what they prefer and want.
