Introduction
There are different levels that a person must undergo for the person to be a highly qualified writer. The skill of writing entails understanding the different requirements that a writer must put into action when writing of the different genres that a particular language has. The more a writer is exposed to different experiences and reviews, the more qualified and precise the writer will be. Writing academic essays entails learning the different requirements that a person needs in expressing ideas and thoughts into written form. There are ways that are applied by the writers so as to present their ideas in the most elaborate manner. The methods make it easier for readers to clearly understand the intentions of the writer as well as the ideas being put across. There are a lot of things that I have learned from this class. There are different methods of analyzing literature that I have learned from this class that are useful in the presentation of clear-cut ideas on different contemporary issues. The different things that I have learned from this class are important things that will help me in the art of writing presently and in the future too.
In this quarter, there are different genres of writing that we learned about. The genres of writing were unrelated and explained different methods of writing based on the guidelines that the genre provided. The detective genre was one of the genres of writing that we analyzed. The detective genre is a genre that encompasses stories and literature based on criminal investigations where the characters have to make inferences out of their detective abilities. In this genre, I learned of the different ways of analyzing the different forms of literature that were under the detective genre. The most notable pieces of literature that I studied were the short stories book about Sherlock Holmes that was written by Conan Doyle as well as the Sherlock Holmes series from BBC as well as making different inferences on the two pieces. Even though the two pieces of literature applied virtually different methods of passing on the information that they had, the content was much the same and so were the characteristics of the characters that were being passed on to the audience. I learned how to read the different stories and how to create precise analyses from the different parts of the story that I analyzed.
In addition to the detective genre, there were different ways of writing essays that I became familiar with. In writing literature review essays, I learned how to analyze the different scholarly texts and how I would put them into the conversation style in helping the reader understand the different intentions and ideas that the author of the literature text did not clearly elaborate. In developing the rhetoric analysis essay, I analyzed the Sherlock Holmes series in BBC while making careful analysis of different cinematic elements such as the different figurations, that Sherlock used and how the different elements of presentation that he used caught the attention of the audience throughout the different scenes. The two types of essays have helped me understand the different items that I should watch for in the analysis of stories and literature of the detective genre.
In relation to the writing skills that I have developed, there are numerous ways through which I am to benefit when I apply the skills. The art of writing is much more than the literal order of thoughts. Instead, there are analytical skills that are applied in the understanding of different pieces of literature. The application of the analytical skills will help me understand the intentions and ideas that a particular writer may want to put across. It will also help me in finding out the hidden meanings that a particular author may use in a piece of literature. The presence of different articles of speech and different elements of speech will enable me understand the pieces of literature and apply the knowledge well.
When analyzing the two essays, I chose to revise the literature essay. The literature essay presented more cases that I needed to solve than the other essay. The essay is also much relevant to other areas of study as one comes across much literature review in the course of study. In perfecting the essay, I saw a way of improving on the different of analyzing pieces of literature and making verifiable inferences from the pieces of literature. The literature essay had different characteristics. After the final revision, there were different strengths and weaknesses that were seen in the essay. The greatest strengths that were recorded in the essay included the comparison of different texts and how the texts were related to the story of Sherlock Holmes. The final draft essay increased the focus on the different methods that Sherlock Holmes used in the deduction of crimes. The essay focused on the different methods and ways of analyzing the deductive properties of the pieces of literature that I focused on. The greater weakness however was the fact that the essay did not fully cover on the different experiences and detailed ways through which Sherlock Holmes used in the solution of different crimes. There were other characteristics of the detective genre of stories that was not analyzed. If there was more time for revision, I would prioritize on elaborating the different methods apart from the scientific method that Sherlock used in making different inferences.
In the rhetoric analysis essay, I chose the paragraph that explains how Sherlock handles the lock code of Irene Adler’s phone and the different characteristics that Sherlock exhibits in this scene. I chose to revise the paragraph as it was rich in different properties of Sherlock Holmes as well as characteristics that were not present in other scenes. The scene in which Sherlock handles Irene’s phone portrayed different abilities that Sherlock had such as the ability to decipher codes and how the same ability would be used in solving crime in the society. The main strength in this paragraph is the portrayal of different characteristics of Sherlock Holmes that were previously not portrayed. The revised paragraph has different properties about the rhetorical analysis that other paragraphs did not have. The use of metaphorical terms and different cinematic elements helped portray different characteristics of Sherlock Holmes.
The art of collaboration helped me understand the different methods of analyzing literature through the use of piece-study allocation. In the first group presentation, I was assigned to find out the main points of the scholarly text. In finding out the main points of the scholarly texts, I was able to unravel the story, “The Sign of the Four” by Conan Doyle. The story helped me understand the staged through which the country passed through in the process of development. In my second group work presentation, I analyzed the text, “A Scandal in Bohemia” and I was required to provide a detailed excerpt that would have an example to accompany it and how it was relevant. The nature of the assignment that was handed to me helped me in studying the whole text, analyzing the whole text and coming up with the said excerpt. The choice of the excerpt was the analysis of how Sherlock Holmes used his deductive capabilities in unraveling the different issues that surrounded him. The third group collaboration involved using the video as a way of expressing the ideas that we had collected. I learned that there are a lot of preparations and resourced that are used in the use of videos as a way of passing on the required information to an audience. In general, the group work taught me how to cope with different demands and how to achieve them and in handling the expectations of a group.
There are different things that I learned from the class that are applicable in other classes and are important in the helping me understand different things about literature analysis. The curiosity to know more about the world helped me analyze and understand the different stories about Sherlock Holmes and the relevance of the stories to the current society.
In conclusion, there are different topics that I was able to understand throughout the class. The art of analyzing literature, creating inferences and the study of the detective genre of literature helped me a lot.
